Sheffield's first town hall was referred to in a 1637 survey of the area.
A new extension to the Town Hall was planned in the late 1930s and necessitated the demolition of the adjacent St Paul's Church in 1938.

Sheffield Town Hall is a building in the city of Sheffield in the north of England.
The exterior is built of "Stoke" stone from the Stoke Hall Quarry in Grindleford, Derbyshire and is decorated with carvings by F. Pomeroy.
The friezes depict the industries of Sheffield, while the 64 metre high clock-tower is surmounted by a statue of Vulcan.

 Sheffield City Council - History of the Town Hall
Sheffield's Town Hall was built considerably later than those of the same period in other industrial centres of Northern England.
The Council appeared to be more concerned with tackling the many social problems caused by the trebling of Sheffield's population between 1843 and 1893, before erecting a prestige monument to the municipality.
It was not until 1886 that the Council obtained the land on which the Town Hall now stands, and the Council launched a competition for architects to design a Town Hall for Sheffield.

Construction of City Hall was delayed 8 years because of the economic climate in the early 1920’s but the tender of a local company, George Longden and Son Ltd was eventually accepted for a total price of £266,592.
In 1932 charges for hiring elements of the Hall ranged from between 3 and 6 guineas for the Memorial Hall to 10 and 20 guineas for the Oval Hall.
Since 1932 City Hall has played host to some of the most famous names of the 20th century and it continues to be an exciting entertainment and arts venue.

The building was commissioned to replace Sheffield's first town hall, which had opened in 1700 to a design by William Renny.
The Old Town Hall was built in 1807–8 by Charles Watson, and was designed to house not only the Town Trustees but also the Petty and Quarter Sessions.
The Old Town Hall was again extended in 1896-7, by the renamed Flockton, Gibbs and Flockton, and became Sheffield Crown Court and Sheffield High Court.

The Town Hall was officially opened on 21st May, 1897 by Queen Victoria.
Sheffield had to wait until 1977 for a new Town Hall Extension.
However, the maps do depict the building of Sheffield's Town Hall and the demolishment of St. Paul's Church, which was eventually replaced with the Peace Gardens.
