 Sheffield Midland station - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Midland Station opened in 1870 and was the fifth and last station to be built in Sheffield's city centre.
The station is connected to the Sheffield Supertram network, and is linked to the city's bus station by a short covered walkway.
The station was given two extra platforms and a new frontage in 1905 at a cost of £215,000.

Yes, the former car park at the front of the station does look a chaotic mess, but if Sheffield One (or whatever they are called) had actually got their arse into gear and done their bit on time, that lovely new public square would have begun construction as soon as the multi storey opened.
Also it doesn't help that Sheffield motorists brain seems to turn to jelly on approaching the station, and the simple abilities to read and follow large signs to the car park and not stop on double yellow lines seem to escape them.
I've come to the conclusion that you are the resident Sheffield basher.

When Sheffield’s Midland Station was built in 1870 it was marvelled as an achievement overcoming the immense difficulties of the local terrain, building rails and roofs over the River Sheaf and so successfully creating a relatively central railway station for Sheffield.
The Stations position as the gateway to Sheffield was consolidated in 1970, one hundred years after it’s opening when all the existing lines merged (with the closure of both the Victoria and Bridge House stations) to operate from Midland Station only.
Today the Station is in a state of change, it is undergoing a major £35million refurbishment programme in an attempt to make a ‘more accessible and easier to use train station’ (David Curtis ‘Sheffield Station on track’, 12 September, 2001).

The refurbishment of Midland Railway Station is a key regeneration project for Sheffield, being undertaken by a partnership of the SCC, Railtrack (the former), the Passenger Transport Executive, the Strategic Rail Authority and Midland Mainline.
The arches at the front of the station will be covered with a glass canopy, providing shelter and a ‘drop-off’ point for those arriving by car, taxi or public transport.

I was driving through Sheffield yesterday evening, i got to the large roundabout near the station and became stuck in heavy traffic (not unusual for Sheffield i suppose!) as I crawled past the station, i noticed a large group of policemen (around 30 or 40 if not more i would guess).
