SHEILA MACLEOD was born in 1939 in the Isle of Lewis, Scotland.
Combining these with her highly intelligent and original assessments of the literature on the subject, Sheila MacLeod presents a remarkable picture of an illness which is becoming alarmingly common (one in every two hundred adolescent girls is at this moment starving herself, possibly to death).
Sheila MacLeod describes with extraordinary clarity her heroine's emotional confusion as she hovers between a fantasy of perfect happiness such as the public might dream up for her and a personal terror of complete hopelessness.

SHEILA DHAR, singer of Hindustani classical music who died at the age of 72 last month, will not be remembered as much for her singing as for what she wrote about the practitioners and practice of singing.
Her central interest in all she wrote was to communicate what it really felt like to be alive in the presence of certain people who had captivated her, or taught her to think or sing, or to look at the world from a slightly different angle.
Sheila Dhar's irreverent and balloon-pricking temperament had to be curbed when she started training to be a singer of Hindustani classical music, for the culture of this musical tradition is feudal and devotional, requiring something between deep respect and unquestioning worship of the ustaad by the shishya.
