Gish emanated physical strength and tenacity, even when afflicted by a cancerous tumour and losing her right eye in an operation to remove it in 2003.
Gish did glamour as well as anyone, and her performance, stately as a galleon, was gorgeous with self-esteem, elegant and irresistibly vain.
Gish was in several TV series such as The Avengers and the adaptation of Kinsley Amis’s That Uncertain Feeling and played an outrageous grande dame in Nancy Mitford’s Love in a Cold Climate.

Telegraph | News | Sheila Gish
Sheila Gish, who died on Wednesday aged 62, epitomised the Tennessee Williams heroines she played on stage: a frail, delicate beauty with a spine of steel.
The eye-patch was embraced as a reason for Arkadina's otherwise inexplicable provincial tour, and Sheila Gish was the centre around which all the other performers circled, much as Arkadina was the focus of attention on her estate.
Sheila Gish was an actress of the old school: serious, dedicated to bringing the text to life on stage, undeviatingly true to the playwrights' intentions.

 Guardian | Sheila Gish
Sheila Gish was born in Lincoln, the daughter of an army officer.
In the course of a peripatetic postwar childhood, she stayed in an SS officer's house in the rubble of Dusseldorf, and saw child beggars in Egypt and Sudan.
On television, Gish demonstrated her range as a notable Mrs Fluck, Diana Dors's mother, in The Blonde Bombshell (1998), and resorted to more familiar type as Lady Montdore, a stuck-up character adept at spotting an eligible earl, in the 2001 version of Nancy Mitford's Love In A Cold Climate.

Obituary: Sheila Gish Independent, The (London) - Find Articles   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
FOR AN actress of such flawless, delicate beauty, the facial cancer that struck Sheila Gish at the peak of her career was a particularly cruel blow.
During her daughters' childhoods, Gish for a time restricted her career primarily to television work with the occasional film role; she played a cameo role in Darling (1965), in which Curram played a major part, for the director John Schlesinger, a family friend.
On a simple smoked-mirrored set Gish, dressed equally simply and stylishly in a Fortuny gown, was a revelation to many, riveting as Racine's love- consumed queen, phrasing and measuring her long Alexandrine cadenzas with a musician's subtlety and communicating a genuinely tragic sense of a personality disintegrating in despair.
