Hancock was married to actor Alec Ross from 1954 until his death from cancer in 1971.

A breast cancer survivor, Sheila's first husband (divorced), actor Alec Ross, died of cancer in 1971 and her second husband, actor John Thaw, died of throat cancer in 2002.
When John Thaw married Hancock he decided to adopt Melanie officially, which is why she bears his surname.

The Associated Press published a human interest story about Sheila Hancock, the woman who paints all the signs at the Daytona International Speedway and at the race tracks in Talladega, Alabama and Darlington, South Carolina.
Hancock graduated from Ringling School of Art in 1975, but never pursued a career in commercial art until she started working for International Speedway Corporation's founder William France five years ago.

Very well written biography / auto-biography mixing between past events and a contemporary diary of Sheila's thoughts as Thaw's illness was diagnosed and his stalwart reaction, through his treatment and after his untimely death.
It strikes me that Sheila Hancock is a very generous and caring human being, attributes she affords her husband.
Hancock divides the chapters with a period of her life then Thaw's which later on merge.
