 | | Sheila McCarthy, who has died aged 90, was the last survivor of the six girls who, with their teacher and director Ninette de Valois, formed the nucleus, in 1931, of the tiny Vic-Wells Ballet, which was to grow into the Royal Ballet of today. |
 | | McCarthy, like all the others, had to undertake an enormous amount of work, appearing in virtually all the productions, whether in important character roles or as a modest member of the corps de ballet. |
 | | In addition, she gradually took on extra duties, teaching the youngest pupils in the school, the drama students and also teaching the famous "class for office workers", designed for the faithful galleryites who so loyally, and vociferously, supported the company in its early days. |
