		Shek Pik (石壁) is a place in the south coast of Lantau Island, Hong Kong.
		Below the dam of the reservoir is Shek Pik Prison.
		Rock carvings from neolithic age was found by Chen Kung-chiek in Shek Pik in 1939 when the local villagers told him there was an engraved craving on the upper part of the beach to the west of Tung Wan

		Shek Pik Reservoir (石壁水塘) is a reservoir in Shek Pik of Lantau Island in Hong Kong.
		The reservoir was built on the a valley Shek Pik Heung (石壁鄉).
		There were four villages, Shek Pik Tai Tseun (石壁大村), Wan Pui Tsuen (墳背村), Kong Pui Tsuen (崗貝村) and Hang Tsai Tseun (坑仔村) in the Shek Pik Heung.

		You can walk eastward along the Shek Pik Dam, pass Tung Wan, Shek Lam Chau, Lo Kei Wan and arrive at Shui Hau.

	Ancient Rock Carvings of Hong Kong
		In addition, several rock carvings have been discovered dating from the Bronze Age (around 3,000 years ago).
		With the exception of the carving at Shek Pik, all are sited on rocky outcrops overlooking a small expanse of water, and consist of geometric patterns resembling those on Bronze Age stamped pottery and bronze vessels found both locally and in North China.
		Occasionally there are suggestions of human or animal images, which may have represented tribal totems, gods or goddesses, and the ledges or platforms which often found in front of the carvings may have been the sites of ritual gatherings.

		We took the ferry from Central Station in Kowloon, disembarked on Lantau at Silver Mine Bay, hopped on a bus, and easily found the trailhead above the turquoise-blue waters of the Shek Pik reservoir.

		Most of the ancient rock carvings in the territory overlook the sea, but Shek Pik Rock Carving is about 300m from the coastline.
		Like most other carvings, apart from those at Shek Pik and Wong Chuk Hang, it is situated on a headland embracing the beautiful bay.
		There is some evidence that early inhabitants who created these carvings depended on the sea for their livelihood.

		The Human Rights Watch/Hong Kong Human Rights Monitor delegation met prisoners who owed HK $20,000, $30,000, even $100,000 (approximately US $2,500 to $13,000).(55) Lacking the means to pay these debts, and fearing retaliation, such prisoners confess to gambling and request placement in segregation.
		The authorities at Shek Pik reported that three staff members had been assaulted by prisoners in the past year.(67) Stanley Prison tends to be the most dangerous for staff.
		A Vietnamese prisoner who had been in segregation at Shek Pik since June 1996 was "removed from association [because] he assaulted staff in Victoria Prison."(85)

		23 trampers enjoyed a leisurely walk from the Po Lin Monastery (Big Buddha) along the ridge overlooking the Shek Pik Reservoir to the South Lantau Road.
		A very late start (2pm from Tung Chung) was most welcome in this weather, and we ended our walk on the Tung Fuk beach shortly after 6pm.

	A brief report of the roosting site in Deep Water Bay by Dr. Lee
		Our butterfly watching addict, Henry Tang, discovered the fourth major winter butterfly valley of Hong Kong in the woodlands, behind Deep Water Bay, Hong Kong Island.It is a small place, roughly the size of two tennis courts, off the main footpath by the stream along side the golf course.
		This happened just a few weeks after the discovery of the third winter butterfly valley in Shek Pik, Lantau.
		The population in Shek Pik was as many as in Deep Water Bay, except that the butterflies disappeared in Shek Pik much earlier perhaps because of the lower temperature there.

		The ride is great for children and those new to mountain biking, ii is also a good way of getting from one end of Lantau to the other without risking life and limb on the South Lantau Road!
