Shel Talmy - Free Music Downloads, Videos, CDs, MP3s, Bio, Merchandise and Links
Talmy was soon working primarily as an independent producer rather than as a label employee, and was keen to get in on the "Beat Boom," as it was called in Britain, with guitar-oriented groups.
Talmy did not produce any Who records after 1965, in spite of his fairly spectacular initial track record with the band, owing to a dispute between him and the group's managers that was eventually settled with an agreement that gave him a percentage of the Who's record royalties for years to come.
For his part, Talmy has said that he doesn't remember serious problems with the band members, and feels that disputes between him and the artists' managers were the cause of most of the tensions, particularly when his association with the Who ended (and the Who's managers took over as the group's producers).

However, a rift developed between the band and Talmy, possibly due to the level of control that the producer seemed to be exerting and the lack of original material in the tracks being recorded.
Shel Talmy's reaction was to take the Who to court as he had a contractual right to record the band that extended as far as a four-year option on future recordings.
Talmy still owned the My Generation recordings and this prevented their release in the UK although there was a release of the album by Virgin some years back.

Talmy's Hollywood-born engineering techniques came together with British talent to make rock history on "You Really Got Me." The Kinks' first huge hit Later covered by Van Halen) was cut in the summer of 1963 in Studio 2 at IBC, a converted 18th century London townhouse.

Eventually, a demo tape reached Shel Talmy, an American record producer under contract to Pye Records.
Talmy helped the group land a contract with Pye in 1964.
Despite the Kinks' tremendous musical growth and artistic success in the studio, their chart performance in the UK and Europe began to stagnate as the tastes of the pop world rapidly changed in late 1967 and into 1968.

Thanks to an agreement with The Who's original producer, Shel Talmy, MCA Records has acquired the never before remixed three-track tapes of 24 of the band's earliest recordings, which will finally allow the songs to be mixed to stereo more than 35 years after their initial mono release.
Talmy, an independent producer who brought The Who to MCA's predecessor label, Decca Records, delivered the monaural mixes in 1965, but the songs were not issued in true stereo at the time, in fact, most were issued in faux stereo.
Talmy, had this to say about The Who "The first time I saw The Who, they were rehearsing at a church hall and I loved what I heard from the word go.

Shel Talmy was an ambitious, young American producer, just coming off a worldwide hit with the Kinks’;, "You Really Got Me", when he signed the Who to a record contract.
Talmy’s style was to completely saturate the tape, place drums and guitar up front in the mix, and cut the disc as hot as he could possibly get away with.
Shel Talmy held the multi-track and mix masters in a safe place for 37 years.

The Who's back catalog has been reissued several times over the last few years, but the one album that was always missing (at least with acceptable sound quality anyway) has been the band's debut--My Generation.
The main problem was The Who's then-producer, Shel Talmy, didn't want to release the master tapes.
Taking the opposite approach is the acapella version of "Anytime You Want Me." Hardcore fans will no doubt be upset that they didn't release everything that Talmy had (there were close to 2 ½ hours of material in the vaults), but the tracks that are included here are sure to please.

But perhaps the biggest lottery win of all landed in the lap of American producer Shel Talmy who in the early sixties was residing in London and producing many of the bands that followed in the wake of The Beatles.
The Who's management soon realized how little they were earning and persuaded Talmy to increase their royalty to 4%, but this was probably still far less than Talmy was getting.
Talmy sued, and in an out-of-court settlement was granted a 5% royalty on all The Who's records and singles for the next six years, up to and including Who's Next in 1971, all their best-selling work.

For that album, consumers have had to be content with a low-budget first-generation compact disc produced by MCA Records in the ’80s, with sub-par sound and bare-bones, generic graphics.
Although Decca and then MCA could release and re-release the 24 songs all they wanted, they only had the original mono mixes that Talmy delivered to them, and the "fake stereo" that was innocently cobbled together in the ’60s (not by Talmy), which is now heavily frowned upon.
Talmy’s multi-track master tapes could easily be mixed to stereo at any time… if the incentive was there.

But the songs were never mixed to stereo (some were released later in faux stereo), and producer Talmy retained possession of the legendary tapes.
Now, more than 35 years later, with various disputes finally resolved, one of the greatest albums in rock--with its anthemic landmarks “My Generation” and “The Kids Are Alright”--is set to be heard like it has never been heard before.

There once was a time when a pill-gobbling, brown-ale-besotted West London teenager, infatuated with the showmanship of big band drummers and the pop utopianism of the Beach Boys, had the unmitigated audacity to play rock 'n' roll drums like a lead instrument.

For his work on the early Kinks and Who records alone, producer Shel Talmy was an important figure in the British Invasion, cutting sessions that had a harder and more distorted guitar sound than anything else that had been heard before the mid-'60s.
This is a reason why The Who Sing My Generation, as well as songs that appeared on their 1965 singles, have yet to appear on compact discs that have been remastered from the best possible original source tapes.
He also made some fine, raucous singles with obscure groups like the First Gear, the Untamed, the Rockin' Vicars, and the Zephyrs, which would not reach an international audience (and then a very small, specialized one) until these sides were included on various collector-oriented reissues of obscure British Invasion music in the '80s and '90s.

It was produced by Shel Talmy, their manager at the time, and Ray Davies thought it came out clean and sterile, when he wanted it to capture the energy of their live shows.
Dave Davies girlfriend backed them up, saying it didn't make her want to "drop her knickers." The Kinks' record company had no interest in letting them re-record this, but due to a technicality in their contract, The Kinks were able to withhold the song until they could do it again.
Talmy thought the first version was good, and also would have been a hit if it was released.

Had Maverick Indie producer Shel Talmy not taken a tip to see a promising new group rehearsing in a Shepherd's Bush church hall, The Who's Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey might now be working at a Cornwall haberdashery instead of playing the ACC Saturday.
Although The Who had already smashed their way through a pile of guitars and drum kits by the time Talmy witnessed their explosive energy first-hand in late 64, it was the visionary Chicago-raised studio whiz who turned The Who into a serious chart threat -- just as he'd done with the Kinks.
