In the county the population was spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 24.40% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 19.70% who were 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a household in the county was $29,448, and the median income for a family was $35,944.

 Isaac Shelby - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Isaac Shelby (December 11, 1750 – July 18, 1826) was an American soldier and the first and fifth Governors of Kentucky, serving from 1792 to 1796 and from 1812 to 1816.
Born in Frederick County, Maryland near Hagerstown, he was the son of Evan and Letitia (Cox) Shelby.
Shelby settled in North Carolina and was elected twice to its legislature.

On September 5, 1891, citizens of Shelby County voted a $25,000 bond issue for construction of a new courthouse.

A neigboring farmer in Hardeman County was L.F. McClanahan, whom they became "intimately acquainted with." Two of their sons were married to McClanahan's.

In 1820, the Missouri compromise took effect, allowing Missouri to be admitted to the Union as a slave state, but also prohibiting slavery north of a line 36 degrees, 30 minutes.
The compromise in Congress; pitted 11 non-slave states against 11 slave states, with agreement coming only when it was determined that Maine would enter the Union (March 15, 1820) as a non-slave state and Missouri (August 10, 1821) as a slave state, thus maintaining a like number of non-slave and slave states.
It would be repealed later by the Stephen A. Douglas’; Kansas-Nebraska bill in 1854, which reopened the issue of slavery in the territories, just prior to the advent of the Civil War.

Frank L. Pitts (Democrat), the nineteenth state treasurer, was born in Shelby County, Missouri on April 25, 1841 and educated in the common schools of Shelby County and the Hannibal public schools.
He entered the Confederate service in the spring of 1861; was wounded at the battle of Franklin, Tennessee, losing his right arm, and was captured and held prisoner at Camp Chase, Ohio until June 13, 1865.
He was sheriff of Monroe County for four years and collector for ten years.
