Shelby County is a county of the State of Alabama and is named in honor of Isaac Shelby, Governor of Kentucky.
As of 2000 U.S. Census, the population was 143,293 and was ranked the fastest growing county in Alabama and one of the fastest growing counties in the country.
In the county the population is spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 33.70% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 8.50% who are 65 years of age or older.

Shelby County was established by an act of the first session of the Legislative Council and House of Representatives of the Alabama Territory on February 7, 1818.
In her account of the history of Shelby County, author Eloise Galloway wrote “Shelby County is a cozy nook in nature’s conservatory where the trees take on their greenest garb, where the mountains are the most rugged and picturesque, where the flowers are the most dainty in coloring, and their aroma the very sweetest”.
Shelby County has within its borders the Coosa and Cahaba Rivers and their numerous tributaries, which lend themselves for use in the many sports available in the area such as fishing, boating, swimming and skiing.

Although sparsely populated at the time, Shelby County began its existence as Tennessee's largest (784 square miles) in area and is now also the largest county in population (over 860,000 people).
The first meeting of the Shelby County Quarterly Court was held on May 1, 1820, and authorized $125 for the construction of a log courthouse and jail along with a property tax of $6.25 per 100 acres of land.
Shelby County property in this strip is still neatly delineated by the Mississippi survey system of section and quarter sections while the northern 80% of the county uses the older Tennessee survey system of "metes and bounds."
