Carroll Shelby - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shelby went on to help design some of the most successful and beautiful cars of the era: the GT40, the Mustang-based Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT500, and of course the 427 Shelby Cobra.
Shelby began working with Dodge at the request of Chrysler Corporation chairman, Lee Iacocca, who had previously been responsible for bringing Shelby to the Ford Mustang.

Dodge Daytona - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The name is taken from Daytona Beach, Florida, which was an early center for auto racing and still hosts the Daytona 500, one of NASCAR's premier events.
The Daytona was built on the 1969 Charger's R/T trim specifications, meaning that it carried a heavy-duty suspension and brake setup and was equipped with a 440 Magnum engine as standard.
New in 1987 was a Shelby Z trim level with an available Turbo II (175 hp) intercooled version of the 2.2 L Chrysler K engine, as well as a heavy-duty A-555 transaxle manufactured by Getrag.

The Shelby Z almost seemed to be built around that engine, and the model name was a gratuitous tip of the hat, if you will, while allowing former Daytona buyers to still feel at home.
Externally, the Shelby Z featured an airdam and side skirts, the rear wing (which was also seen on other Daytona models), and 15x6.5 aluminum 'crab' wheels.
For 1988, the Shelby Z was mostly carry-over.

Shelby asked him to drive the Coupe in some of the upcoming European races which he eagerly agreed to.

Shelby, a successful race driver from Texas, and winner (along with Roy Salvadori) of the 1959 LeMans race in an Aston Martin DBR1, developed the Daytona Coupe with the intent of beating Ferrari's GTO.
