The Shelby Street Bridge was originally known as the Sparkman Street Bridge and was built one block away from Broadway Avenue on Sparkman Street.
The Jefferson Street Bridge was rejected because of its similarity to the Shelby Street Bridge and the fact that the Shelby Street Bridge was in better condition.
The refurbishment of the bridge cost in excess of $15 million and was done under the supervision and planning of the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

The original Shelby Street Bridge, constructed in 1908, was closed to vehicular traffic in 1998.
Among the amenities featured on the new bridge are improved safety and ADA compliant features, such as pedestrian bridge rails, an elevator, ramps and stairways.

The Shelby Street Bridge, originally opened to the public in 1909, was deemed unfit to continue accommodating traffic in the mid-90s and was to be torn down.
After much public outcry regarding the bridge’s historical significance, then-Mayor Phil Bredesen decided to make it a pedestrian bridge that would link the stadium with the west side of the city where most of the game day parking is located.
In order to accommodate the bridge for the large volume of pedestrian traffic, a number of modifications were made including adding new approaches, repairing damaged metal, laying a new deck, and adding handrails.
