He was drafted in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft in the third round (71st overall) by the New Jersey Devils where he played from 1997 to 1999 before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens on March 1, 2000 for Vladimir Malakhov.
After suffering a serious wrist injury which kept him out of the entire 2002-2003 season, Souray returned to play for the Canadiens and had a milestone season, amassing the largest goal total of his career and participating in the 2004 NHL All-Star Game.
During a dispute, Souray was accused of physically abusing Bridges, but no charges were filed, and Souray has since been cleared from any wrongdoing.

Two years ago, I was lambasted on another forum for saying to get Sheldon Souray, because he had excellent potential and would quickly become an excellent D-man........and you guys think I couldn't be GM Back in November, I posted a Comrie proposal, which I never do.
Souray's already there, and let's remember his career was in doubt not so long ago.
I'm happy for Souray, though, always liked him and the only reason he left NJ was they needed a veteran backliner for a Cup run.
