Antarctic Ice Shelf Collapses, March 2002
The area lost by the shelf was was almost solely the region covered by melt ponds in late January.
One idea is that meltwater seeping between ice crystals and warming of the shelf as a whole, reduces the fracture toughness of the ice so that the shelf shatters under the same stresses imposed by local geography and the flow it used to tolerate.
In particular, the next shelf to the south, the Larsen C, is very near the stability limit, and may start to recede in the coming decade if the warming trend continues.

Antarctic Ice Shelf Collapses: Global Warming Blamed
An Antarctic ice shelf the size of a small country has disintegrated under the impact of global warming, scientists said March 19, 2002.
Over the last five years the shelf has lost a total of 5,700 square kilometres (2,280 square miles), and is now about 40 percent the size of its previous minimum stable extent.
Meltwater acts to enhance fracturing of the shelf by filling smaller cracks and forcing them through the thickness of the ice due to the weight of the water.

The term "shelf talker" refers to any type of merchandising aid, which simultaneously masks the face of a shelf and advertises the product sitting on that shelf.
Typically, they consist of a flap, which is designed to adhere to the shelf via some adhesive, and a graphical portion, which hangs down in front of the shelf face.
But the range of shelf talkers available to the collector is far from limited to those made by Kenner; quite a few Star Wars licensees resorted to this cheap form of signage to aid the sale of their products.

Global warming blamed as huge Antarctic ice shelf collapses
NSIDC researcher Ted Scambos said the ice disintegrated because of the presence of ponded meltwater on the surface in late summer as the climate warms.
"The shelf retreats that have occurred so far have had few consequences for sea-level rise, but break-ups in some other areas like the Ross Ice Shelf could lead to increases in ice flow off the Antarctic and cause sea level to rise," Scambos said.
