Shelf cloud - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A shelf cloud is a low, horizontal wedge-shaped arcus cloud, associated with a thunderstorm gust front (or occasionally with a cold front, even in the absence of thunderstorms).
Unlike a roll cloud, a shelf cloud is attached to the base of the parent cloud above it (usually a thunderstorm).
Generally speaking, a shelf cloud appears on the leading edge of a storm, and a wall cloud will usually be at the rear of the storm.

Shelf clouds and roll clouds are examples of "accessory clouds" that you may see beneath the cloud base of a storm.
A shelf cloud may also appear to the southwest of a wall cloud in association with a phenomena called the rear flank downdraft (which will be discussed later).
Shelf clouds tend to slope downward away from the precipitation while wall clouds tend to slope upward away from the precipitation area.

A shelf cloud is a low-level horizontal arcus-type cloud that appears to be wedge-shaped as it approaches.
It is an extension of the main cloud and the underside is concaved upward, turbulent, boiling, or wind-torn.
Shelf clouds are formed when the rain cooled air beneath a thunderstorm sinks, hits the ground, and fans out in all directions.

 Identifying Clouds
Shelf clouds are an indication of outflow, normally where advancing cold air meets warm air, ploughing forward forcing it to rise.
This and the shelf cloud should not be confused with a wall cloud.
These cloud formations usually occur on the rear side of the storm in the overhanging anvil although they can be seen at the leading edge as well.

A shelf cloud resembles it's name of course, and is defined as a low cloud and horizontal (not vertically prominent like many storm clouds).
A shelf cloud is usually curved or semicircular and sticks out like a shelf from a parent cloud (usually a thunderstorm cloud).
I wanted to explain the reason for the gusty winds because a shelf cloud is associated with those gusty winds and is created by the outflow of the storm.

However, in contrast, true funnel clouds will display persistent, organized, rotation on a vertical, or nearly vertical axis, and typically, weather conditions on the front side of a storm near or under the shelf cloud are not conducive to tornado formation.
Wall clouds are an obvious lowering of the rain-free base of a storm, and tend to form on the backside of a thunderstorm cell, relative to the thunderstorm movement.
Rotating wall clouds are compact in width (in contrast to the shelf cloud), usually 1 to 4 miles in width, and look like a big, flat thumb, or a rain-barrel, or a shirt collar that is attached to the nearly rain-free base of the storm in the early stages.

The beaver's tail is another significant type of cloud band The beavers tail is a smooth, flat cloud band that extends from the eastern edge of the rain free base to the east or northeast.
A shelf cloud may also appear to the southwest of a wall cloud in association with a phenomena called the rear flank downdraft (RFD).
Small cloud elements in or near the wall cloud will have these characteristics (and some tornadoes do not form from wall clouds), but these four characteristics are good rules of thumb to follow.

Roll Cloud vs. Shelf Cloud- Weathersavvy
A shelf cloud resembles it's name of course, but in more detail it is a low cloud and horizontal (not vertically prominent like many storm clouds).
So basically the shelf cloud is a result of thunderstorm downdrafts spreading out into and lifting up relatively warm and moist air.
Unlike shelf clouds, roll clouds are completely unattached from a parent storm cloud.

Roll clouds are like a shelf clouds, they are along an outflow area of a thunderstorm, but they do roll..

A funnel cloud is not a tornado if the circulation is not in contact with the ground.
