  Pavement (roads) - Dangeruss-Industries.com
Most asphalt pavements are built on an imported gravel base which is generally at least as thick as the asphalt layer, although some 'full depth' pavements are built directly on the native subgrade.
Brick, cobblestone and wood plank pavements were once common in urban areas throughout the world, but due to their high manual labor requirements they are typically only maintained for historical reasons.
As pavements primarily fail due to fatigue (in a manner similar to metals), the damage done to a pavement increases exponentially with the axle load of the vehicles traveling on it.

In theoretical pavement design methods, the material properties determined in the laboratory are used in a model and the long- term behavior of the pavement is forecast based on this model.
Standard design curves are given for the thickness of roadbase required to carry the traffic expected to use the road during its design life, life being defined in terms of the timing of pre-emptive pavement strengthening.
Pavement structural design, reconstruction and maintenance methods involve the use of theoretical models and varying degrees of experimental verification which should make it possible to adjust the parameters defined in the models and check, on real cases, the assumptions upon which the methods were based.

Structural road design - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Structural road design aims to ensure the road is strong enough for the expected number of vehicles in a certain number of years.
The input of a calculation is the number expected of vehicles (e.g 10,000,000) divided in groups (f.e.
For asphalt the Shell Pavement design is often used.

The design of a concrete overlay on a rigid pavement requires an assessment of the structural integrity of the existing rigid pavement.
Pavements to serve light aircraft may be constructed of full-depth asphalt using the criteria specified in paragraph 322.
The design curves presented in Chapter 3 or 5 are used to determine the load-carrying capacity of the existing pavement.

The study demonstrates that either the design life of a conventional pavement section can be almost doubled by redistributing the base material to form a tapered section, or the base material can be reduced by at least 20 per cent without reducing design life.
The primary mode of pavement distress in Malaysia is cracking in the bituminous surfacing due to a reflection of cracks from existing pavement and age-hardening of the bituminous materials.
Design and construction of overlays on cracked pavements are therefore aimed at avoiding reflection cracking.

SELECTION OF SUBGRADE MODULUS FOR PAVEMENT OVERLAY DESIGN PROCEDURES
This subgrade property is used in the design of new pavement sections as well as in the rehabilitation of existing roadways.  Without adequate information on the roadbed soil, a pavement structure will be improperly designed and as a result, it may fail prematurely.
Most newly developed pavement and overlay design procedures also require the characterization of materials.  This requirement resulted in the development of several laboratory tests to simulate actual field conditions in the laboratory.  One of these tests is the resilient modulus test for subgrade soils.
The design resilient modulus values computed from the laboratory analysis in Chapter IV were based on a deviator stress of 41.4-kPa (6-psi).

Usually when a pavement has been evaluated, there is so much data that it doesn't make sense.
PAVEMENT DESIGN From AUSTROADS (2001), the pavement thickness design chart for thin bituminous surfacings is here WARNING - this method does not analyse for specific basecourse or subbase performance and the road can also fail in those layers.
The issue is that pavement surfacings have failed because an underlying asphalt layer has stripped and turned to mush.
