Shellac - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shellac is a brittle or flaky secretion of the lac insect Coccus lacca, found in the forests of Assam and Thailand.
In actuality, shellac was obtained from an excretion of the female bug, harvested from the bark of the trees where she deposits it to provide a sticky hold on the trunk.
Because it is compatible with most other finishes, shellac is also used as a barrier or primer coat on wood to prevent the bleeding of resin or pigments into the final finish, or to prevent wood stain from blotching.

Shellac (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shellac (sometimes referred to as 'Shellac of North America') is an American rock music group formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1992 by Steve Albini (guitar and vocals), Bob Weston (bass guitar vocals) and Todd Trainer (drums).
Shellac's signature sound is often associated with their enthusiasm for vintage Travis Bean guitars, a rare brand of aluminium-based instruments.
In 2005, Shellac were recorded playing 'Steady As She Goes' in an abandoned house as part of a film project called Burn To Shine, organised by Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty and film-maker Christoph Green.

Shellac - 1000 Hurts (Touch and Go)
Shellac is a band whose members are famous for being super tough nerds.
As Shellac fans, we all already are familiar with the nerd/tough-ass dyad that exists in the band, and I think that most of us feel that the tension between these two reactive elements is what makes their music so fun to listen to.
I felt that whatever conflicts were already brewing within the band's collective personality would surely be precipitated by this state of affairs into an all out and decisive battle that would have one of two possible results.

Shellac at Lounge Ax: Halloween 1998
When I heard that Shellac was playing The Rave in Milwaukee on October 30th, the day before their Lounge Ax show, I figured I'd see 'em up in Cheeseland.
Shellac started setting up their equipment and it was strange that they didn't have the big Shellac Silver Amps or the Shellac Green Travis Bean Guitars but other than that there was nothing suspicious.
Halloween with Shellac and The Jesus Lizard's David Yow as the Sex Pistols, at Chicago's Lounge Ax, was one of those Triumphant Rock Moments for fans, the kind they talk about for years and gather the memories of dropped-jaws and raised eyebrows of friends who thought they had better things to do that night.

Shellac's Steve Albini Serves Up The Unvarnished Truth
[Shellac] had sort of developed a sort of general dislike and distrust of festival mentality, because festivals by and large are set up to exploit an audience that isn't particularly...
The original intention of that piece was, I guess, sort of a wake-up call for bands in the position of being tempted to sign to big record labels during a period when big record labels were actively fishing within the underground music scene for bands to sign.
Granted, bands that are signing to big record labels do still end up in the uncomfortable situation of having to pay for the origination and making of the records that the record company will then make profits off of.

But Shellac is also known for one of its more visible band members, the bespectacled Steve Albini, who's made his name as a prolific recording studio engineer, based out of his Electrical Audio space in Chi-town.
He and the band also recorded a longtime pet project of the band's, a more raucous version of their 1977 sophomore album "In Color," which may (or, likely, may not) see the light of day.
Shellac will be involved again in next year's spring festival, along with Belle and Sebastian, and Mogwai, as curators past and present pick their lineups for each day of the festival.

With occasional exceptions, both have a very male fanbase, to the point that the band playing with a woman in its ranks is cause for note and possible concern from the hardercore, more misogynist fans.

But bands like Sonic Youth and Shellac (fronted by Steve Albini, who's been playing various formulations of punk since he formed Big Black in the mid-'80s) can't afford to be anything less than ambitious.
Watching them onstage, you'd never once think "nostalgia trip" -- partly because neither band has songs that are anything like what you'd call "greatest hits," but mainly because what both bands were offering was stronger than cheap nostalgia; their music is too honest, too new, for that tag.
The wrinkles are starting to show, but both bands are having the time of their lives.

 Neurot: Beyond the Pale
Even with the low-end in the house system totally crippled Shellac was a machine, Bob Weston and Todd Trainer, one of the most unique looking men in rock, form one of the tightest rhythm sections in the world, and Steve's angular and precise guitar work gives them a sound all their own.
As per normal for Shellac the songs played weren't in any set order, and they came from all over their history as a band, from their first 7" to the most recent album.
Live Shellac intentionally draws out some of the more introspective parts to build tension, with Albini often improvising lyrics in a storytelling like atmosphere, this procedure, uncommon in rock music and deviating from the recorded output of course usually prompts many an aspiring wit to shout out asinine things like 'start rocking'.

The Big Black catalogue was consolidated and reissued in late '92, augmented by the release of Pigpile, a live album recorded in London during the quartet's 1987 farewell tour.
Albini leads his troupe through such angry slices of niho-philosophy, depravity and arson as "Big Money," "Stinking Drunk," "Fists of Love," "Jordan, Minnesota," "Kerosene" and "Bazooka Joe" (for which the liner notes note "part of the drum track is an M1 carbine being fired in a field exercise by a guy named Joe").
Terraform's greatest moment, and maybe Shellac's best overall, is the closing "Copper," in which Albini — at a lyrical peak — equates copper to an ugly duckling, lamenting that the metal "will never be gold." Under two minutes long and astonishingly catchy, it's essentially pop punk.

There are so many fucking brilliant truths to the Shellac story that I can't begin to list them all--but I'll try to elbow through a few: First, of course, you've got Albini--the most celebrated asshole in American independent rock.
Written as a soundtrack for a dance production, the Futurist was recorded, and later deemed not fit for proper release by the band--who decided instead to press a limited run and give it to some of their friends and family members as a gift.
the band printed a list of all of the recipients as the records front cover, circling in silver pen the name of each record holder as they were distributed--insuring that if the person were to, say, sell the record on the internet, the band would be able to figure out whodunit.

Their back story -- band quickly forms and folds in Boston in the early '80s after releasing a handful of EPs and LPs full of brilliant, genre-changing experimental rock -- was already a significant footnote on alternative rock history.
Reformed except for the absence of tape manipulator Martin Swope, who was replaced with the capable Bob Weston of Shellac, the band's subsequent performances were exuberant displays of dynamic rock n' roll.

This was the first time that this aspect of the band (though implied on previous releases) had been thoroughly explored in a particular setting.
This was then followed by the band attempting (unsuccessfully) to play one of their older songs, "Fat Dog's Gonna Hatch", as they started and stopped the song at various points in their quest to 'get it right'.

There isn't much question that Shellac has about as distinctive a sound as a rock band can.
Albini started Shellac in 1993, fresh off his success producing Nirvana's In Utero (he is also acclaimed for his work on albums by The Pixies, PJ Harvey, Man or Astro-man?, and others).
The group's angular sound, comprised of bizarre schizophrenic time signatures, incredibly jagged guitar parts, and totally stripped-down no-frills production that has become Albini's calling card is clearly descended from work he did in his old bands, '80s cult heroes Big Black and the short-lived Rapeman (which featured members of The Jesus Lizard).
