On one estate our key contact (a local Community Champion) was actually hounded off the estate just as we entered into planning with her and her estate contacts.
Outcome Unfortunately due to events on the estate and issues related to the murder and funeral of a young person friendly with this group the proposed workshops had to be abandoned.
Estate of the Art project conclusions: The work through this funding on all five estates has been completed except for completion of the magazine.

Shelthorpe School serves a large council housing estate and the children are predominantly Anglo-European.
There are many social problems on parts of the estate, with drug use and dealing being one of them.
(Charnwood Arts ran a park based arts programme in Shelthorpe in the summer of 2001 which was still strongly in the children’s thoughts when this current work was conducted.) They love fairs and want a permanent one in their area.

The mural was painted onto a prominent external wall on the Greenhill estate visible from both the local shops and the main road through the estate.
Residents on all the estates helped to raise additional funds demonstrating their commitment and partnership with the project.
The Warwick Way participants were also reluctant to travel outside the estate to attend the museum workshops, which resulted in disappointing attendance.

 "Planning For Real" Community Consultation in the Woodthorpe Area of Charnwood Borough Council
An important part of the process is training local residents in the background and methodology of PfR in order that they may act as facilitators and their local knowledge is therefore harnessed and utilised as a power source to fuel change.
In Woodthorpe, we used Shelthorpe Primary School as our base and the community facilitators (who were an excellent cross-section of the local community) were provided with PfR training there.
Shelthorpe Recreation Ground has created a great deal of interest with many requests that it should be improved.

Some children in Shelthorpe also expressed their parents’ desires to move away from the estate but knew this was not possible due to lack of finance.
Children in Shelthorpe in particular demonstrated a very ‘adult’ appreciation and awareness of planning for the whole community and considering the needs of others.
Initiatives such as the drama project developed at Shelthorpe School funded from the local Network Fund (formally the Children’s Fund) are examples of projects that have arisen as a direct result of this consultation process.

However, the number of residents on the new estate might not be sufficient to ensure the viability of a new service.
One lady expressed local fears well when she said to me: "It will turn Shelthorpe into an inner city area." The result, it hardly needs saying, is bad for social equity, a stated aim of planning policy.
I spoke recently with some residents of Shelthorpe Road who wanted the Epinal Way Extension, but not if it were to be dual carriageway, and not the housing development, which they felt would generate enough traffic to negate the benefit of the road.

 Good Shepherd Church (C of E), Loughborough, Leics.
The land for the new Church Hall, situated in Park Road, was purchased from the council by the Parish of Emmanuel.
The foundation stone, which was donated by the Beacon Lodge of Freemasons was laid by the Bishop of Leicester (Dr. Cyril Bardsley) in a ceremony on Saturday 18 December 1937.
It was for the women on the new estate who had moved from their previous homes.

The severance associated with Shelthorpe Road cuts off one side of Shelthorpe Road from the rest of the community, and acts as a dampener on pedestrian journeys between Shelthorpe and Loughborough town centre.
The National Cycling Strategy, published in July 1996, has the headline target of doubling the number of cycle journeys between 1996 and the end of 2002; with a further doubling by the end of 2012 (a quadrupling of cycle journeys between 1996 and 2012).
In 1995 I was elected to Charnwood Borough Council as a representative of Woodthorpe Ward, which includes the Shelthorpe estate and Woodthorpe village.

The change in the estate was a relatively recent development as they told us that when they first moved their in the mid-1960s, the estate was a very nice place in which to live, with a real sense of community as people looked after their neighbours.
They thought that it was only due to recent years of neglect that had allowed the more undesirable element on the estate to grow in power.
They cited preferential treatment for the Shelthorpe estate as part of the problem, which had left the Old Ashby Road area to become the forgotten estate of Loughborough.

So, recognising the need to relieve Shelthorpe Road which is unfairly acting as a ring road, Labour decided that the most effective way of getting the extension road was to agree to a development on the proposed route.
There are developers waiting to build the road and a new housing estate, which will be within the town boundary between Woodthorpe and Shelthorpe.
It's also important to admit that Shelthorpe Road will never revert to the volume and pace it was in, say, the 1970's, traffic has just increased in all directions.

It is easy to get lost at the northern end of the ring road - as if you dont spot the right roundabout you end up on a narrow road through a housing estate - where the ringroad was originally designed to go.
The are surprisingly few shortcuts to avoid the major roads - as large chunks of land are owned by the Uni and the Schools, so the roads have to go around these.

It's not as 'hard' as all that here, people just think they are and who gives a monkeys anyway!
There's some famous people who have come from here and when it was built even the estate itself was famous because of how it was designed..
