  Shemya Island, the Aleutians
Shemya is a two mile by four mile island at the end of the Aleutian chain, 200 miles from Russia.
Shemya is the second last island in the chain, and on the outermost island were based a few Coast Guard members.
I was surprised to discover that Alaska supposedly has more varieties of orchids than any other place (I don't remember where I read this, but I DID read it.) A friend was on leave during our month of summer; when he came back he was ohhing and ahhing because he discovered one bedraggled daisy.

 Eareckson Air Station
Shemya was originally intended as a B-29 base for the bombing of Japan.
Shemya, instead, became the home of the 28th Bomber Group whose B-24s flew bomber and photo-reconnaissance missions against the northern Kurile Islands while its B-25s, based on Attu, attacked Japanese shipping in the North Pacific.
Shemya was redesignated from an Air Force Station to an Air Force Base on 21 June 1968.
