LAI, NAR and CGR of Shennong No.2 and its parents were tested in order to learn the heterosis of photosynthetic efficiency of the hybrid through sampling every 10 days from elongation to maturity.
In two varieties, Shennong No.2 and Rio, individual average growth rates decreased only by 10% as compared with the peak value from peak stage to mature stage but decreased by 44% in Jinza 4 (1.83g/plant/day).Therefore about 50% of dry matter could be produced during 1/3 of the late stages of development in sweet sorghum.

 Chinese Medicine, Regent Tour China
The history of Chinese medicine is said to go back as far as 5,000 years to the time of Shennong, a divine husbandman credited with the discovery of medicinal herbs.
They classified the medicinal effects of the plants on the various parts of the body, then tested them to determine their toxicity, what dosages would be lethal and so forth.
The validity of that statement is surely one to be debated but Shennong Bencaojing (Shennong's Classic on material Medical) describes the medicinal effects of some 365 herbs and is the earliest known text of its kind.

The origins of tea culture and the brewing of dried tea leaves into a beverage are obscure; experts believe, however, that the tea plant originated in a region encompassing Tibet, western China, and northern India.
According to ancient Chinese legend, the emperor Shennong (Shen-Nung) learned how to brew the beverage in 2737 BC when a few leaves from the plant accidentally fell into water he was boiling.
Tea leaves began to be processed and were sold in cakes of steamed leaves or in powder or leaf form.

Their thesis was that at some point (during the Warring States or later) the characters of old mythologies, which still could be studied in neighbouring cultures, had been stripped of their original mythical content, and incorporated as historical heroes.
This is part of his argument that the Fiery Emperor was different from Shennong because the Fiery Emperor was a deity of drought and fire, as opposed to Shennong, who was linked with agriculture and water, as well as being the brother of the Yellow Emperor in some traditions.
In fact, I am not sure that Sima Qian's version is the most "mainstream" of the stories on the Yellow Emperor, probably because he adapted it a lot to strip it of its mythical contents, and also because he took away the three augusts, which are an important part of the same story...

 The Nature of Ginseng
Each herb in the Shennong Bencao Jing is described by only a few sentences that, despite their brevity, convey much to the traditional physicians.
As an example of the relationship between taste and effects, sweet (pleasant tasting) herbs and foods are said to enhance the function of the "spleen" (which refers not to the anatomical spleen but to an organ system that mainly comprises the digestive functions) and to nourish the body.
This section does not indicate that ginseng can be used as a weight loss herb for the obese, nor does it even suggest that one can live longer on this earth by taking the herb regularly; it refers specifically to the Taoist concept of transformation to an ethereal immortal.
