  Shenzhou-5 - Quick Facts
The Shenzhou spacecraft appears similar to the Russian Soyuz, but is different in dimensions (slightly larger and heavier) and does not seem to use any detailed parts copied from the Soyuz or built under license.
Unlike the American shuttle Shenzhou is equipped with a launch escape tower, which can pull the crew capsule away from the booster in case of a failure or explosion during the first 160 seconds of flight.
Shenzhou has a total weight of 7800 kg (17,000 lbs), is 8.55 m (28 ft) long and has a maximum diameter of 2.8 m (9.2 ft).

Scientific American: China's Great Leap Upward
The Shenzhou's launch escape system is based on the "tractor rocket" scheme originally developed for NASA's Mercury flights in the early 1960s and later adopted by the designers of the Apollo and Soyuz spacecraft.
Because the Shenzhou, like the Soyuz, has a limited amount of cabin space, small stature is a requirement: each astronaut is under 170 centimeters (five feet, seven inches) tall and weighs less than 65 kilograms (143 pounds).
Because some of the critical ground-control functions for the Shenzhou's return to Earth must be performed while the craft is over the South Atlantic, China signed an agreement with the African nation of Namibia in 2000 to build a tracking station near the town of Swakopmund.

Shenzhou 6 (Chinese: 神舟六号) was the second human spaceflight of the People's Republic of China, launched on 12 October 2005 on a Long March rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.
Unlike the unmanned Shenzhou flights, Shenzhou 5 and 6 were launched during daylight hours to provide greater safety in case of abort.
The Wen Wei Po newspaper have reported that the rocket appeared the same as that used for Shenzhou 5 except that a "transition segment" was visible at the top of the Shenzhou 6 stack, attached to one end of the orbital module.
