Auk, The: A NEW SPECIES OF AKALAT (SHEPPARDIA) NARROWLY ENDEMIC IN THE EASTERN ARC OF TANZANIA
Those data corroborate the recognition of a new species, Sheppardia aurantiithorax, and show relatively high levels of sequence divergence among populations of the different species.
Although the composition of major groups within the Muscicapidae remains to be clarified, the genus Sheppardia was partly recovered by Roy et al.
Two species, Sheppardia montana (Alethe montana; Reichenow 1906) and S. Iowa (Alethe lowei; Grant and Mackworth-Praed 1941) are restricted to high-altitude forests of the West Usambara and Udzungwa mountains and adjacent highlands north of Lake Malawi, respectively.

 Forest Management
A recent example is the work of Matiku (1996) on the East Coast Akalat Sheppardia gunningi in Arabuko-Sokoke: from his results, it is clear that increased human disturbance, removal of fallen deadwood and opening of the canopy are likely to be very damaging to this species.
The presence of the akalat is, indeed, an indicator of relatively undisturbed forest; if surveyed during the right season, when its call is easily detected, it is a highly appropriate species to monitor.

Gabela Akalat (Sheppardia gabela) - BirdLife species factsheet
Range & population Sheppardia gabela is known only from a few forest patches within 40 km of Gabela, on the escarpment of western Angola.
A recent brief survey (2003) found that the forest around Gabela has largely been transformed, but this species was recorded at a single, large forest block which survives near the village of Kumbira and in secondary bush near the town of Seles
This information is based upon, and updates, the information published in BirdLife International (2000) Threatened birds of the world.

Taken together, the West Kilombero Scarp forests, Mwanihana and Udzungwa Scarp have presumably viable populations of four Udzungwa endemics with the following total population estimates: Udzungwa colobus (Procolobus badius gordonorum 15,400), Sanje mangabey (Cercocebus galeritus sanjei 1350), Udzungwa forest partridge (Xenoperdix udzungwensis 3700) and rufous-winged sunbird (Nectarinia rufipennis 6850).
The mountains are also strongholds for Swynnerton's robin (Swynnertonia swynnertoni), Iringa akalat (Sheppardia lowei), dapple-throat (Arcanator orostruthus), white-winged apalis (Apalis chariessa), Usambara weaver (Ploceus nicolli), and for Abbott's duiker (Cephalophus spadix).
Appropriate village based conservation measures need to address questions about sustainable forest use, hunting and possibilities for forest regeneration in large tracts of fire-maintained grasslands.

The only strict endemic bird in this ecoregion is Reichenow’s batis (Batis reichenowi), which some taxonomists do not recognize as a valid species.
The near-endemic species, which include the east coast akalat (Sheppardia gunningi, VU) and the Spotted ground thrush (Zoothera guttata, EN), are also found elsewhere along the eastern coast of Africa, and sometimes further inland.
Further investigation in this region, in particular in northern Mozambique, will likely add to the list of bird species and may discover additional interesting species.

The most restricted species on the mainland is Clarke’s weaver (Ploceus golandi), which is known only from Arabuko-Sokoke and one adjacent forest in coastal Kenya.
Somewhat more wide-ranging species found in these forests include the Sokoke Scops Owl (Otus ireneae, EN), Fischer’s turaco (Tauraco fischeri), plain-backed sunbird (Anthreptus pallidigaster, EN), spotted ground-thrush (Zoothera guttata, EN), east coast akalat (Sheppardia gunningi,VU) and the southern-banded snake eagle (Circaetus fasciolatus).
At least 158 species of mammal use this ecoregion, approximately 17% of the total species in the Afrotropical realm.
