Shepton Mallet is a small rural town in Somerset, England, situated five miles to the east of Wells and just south of the Mendip Hills.
Shepton Mallet (High Street) closed with the withdrawal of passenger services on the Yatton to Witham line in 1963, though part of the former East Somerset line remains open for freight and as a heritage railway.
Shepton Mallet became home to a group of roughly 30 protesters in February of 2006, as they fought a planning decision by the town council to allow construction of a Tesco's store nearer the town centre to replace the out-of-town Tesco supermarket.

In November 1830, West Country workers in Shepton, Bruton, Wincanton, Wells, and Glastonbury caused serious concern as it became evident that the dissatisfaction was by no means confined to a few disgruntled townsmen.
In the space of just a few years, from 1830-1840, the population of Shepton Mallet halved, and the once proud factories and mills were either burned by gangs of disgruntled navvies or were left to crumble into bleak ruins.
While Gloucestershire and Yorkshire clothiers prospered, Shepton fell by the wayside, a victim of its own truculent determination not to let modern technology destroy the way of life its inhabitants had known for so long.

Shepton Mallet prison was built in 1610 and is the country's oldest jail.
Fowler was returned to military prison in the USA to serve his life sentence while Leatherberry was sent to Shepton Mallet to be hanged by Tom Pierrepoint on the 16th of March 1944.
He had been convicted of Violation of the 92nd Article of War (murder) and was executed by an 8 man firing squad in the prison grounds on Tuesday the 30th of May 1944 for the murder of his sergeant, Sgt. Thomas Evison at Broomhill Camp in Devon.

It is mentioned in the Domesday Survey as subordinate to the manor of Pilton, which had been granted by Ini, king of the West Saxons, to the Abbots of Glastonbury, by whom it was retained for above 400 years.
After the Norman conquest the estate passed from Roger de Curcelle, a Norman noble, to the Malet or Mallet family, who resided in a strong castle at Curry Mallet, but taking part with the barons in the reign of John, their estates were forfeited to the crown.
One weekly newspaper, the Shepton Mallet Journal and East Somerset Herald is issued on Friday.
