Towns.Besides Freetown (q.v.) the capital (pop., 1901, 34,463), the most important towns for European trade are Bonthe, the port of Sherbro, Port Lokko, at the head of the navigable waters of a stream emptying itself into the Sierra Leone estuary, and Songo Town, 30 m.
The oil-palm and kola-nut tree are especially abundant in the Sherbro district and its hinterland, the Mendi country.

Hall was keenly interested in the Sherbro economy and therefore photographic images of occupational endeavors make up a large portion of his collection.
The principal economic undertakings at the time of his visit were farming, fishing, salt-making, or spinning and weaving and, in many cases, individuals engaged in more than one.
Hall wrote that "A fair amount of cotton is grown in the colony, for native use, and a considerable amount of yarn is spun and woven..." Most weavers in the Sherbro area are Mende-speaking residents.

The Sherbro (also known as Bullom-speaking) peoples believe they have always lived in the coastal regions where Hall visited them.
Hall described the administration of Sherbro territory as being "subject to the rule of their own Chiefs, under the general supervision of a Provincial Commissioner, a District Commissioner and his Assistant, who are British.
The Chiefs have their own courts with jurisdiction over most cases...which they decide according to customary law." In taking decisions, Hall wrote, the chief is expected to take into account the advice of the native administration which includes a Speaker and Elders.

Kpana Lewis was the last Sherbro ruler who came close to realising the power of the Kong Kuba, the title of the King of all the Sherbro.
