In answer to a petition from the Fathers of First Council of Quebec to the Holy See, portions of the Dioceses of Montreal and Quebec were formed into a separate bishopric by a papal Bull dated 8 June, 1852.
Hyacinthe, the titular city, is a typical French Canadian industrial town; it stands on the banks of the Yamaska, thirty-five miles from Montreal, and has a population of 10,000.
The new bishop was a highly-cultured man with rare financial ability; realizing that the debts of his cathedral called for unusual measures, he closed the episcopal palace and retired with his staff to Beloeil, where he combined the duties of bishop and pastor of this parish till his death on 25 July, 1875.

The area of Sherbrooke was first settled in 1793 by American Loyalists, including Gilbert Hyatt, a farmer from Schenectady, New York, who built a flour mill in 1802.
The city grew considerably on January 1, 2002, by the mergers of the cities of Sherbrooke, Ascot, Bromptonville, Deauville, Fleurimont, Lennoxville, Rock Forest, and Saint-Élie-d'Orford.

Based in Sherbrooke, the commissioner was the leading North American official of the company and, accordingly, one of the most powerful men in the Eastern Townships.
He also involved himself in education at the provincial level, serving on the Protestant committee of the Council of Public Instruction as an associate (non-voting) member from 1876 to 1881, as a regular member from 1881 to 1900, and as chairman of the committee from 1892 to 1900.
The mayor was chosen by the city council from among its members and Heneker, who sat on the council from 1867 to 1868 and again from 1876 to 1882, served another term in 1877.

CUPE Local 1114 workers are claiming victory after city councillors in Sherbrooke announced last week that they had shelved plans to sell their local hydro utility to Hydro Québec.
The sell-off would have netted the city some $225 million, but would have cost residents more in the long run in property taxes, and it might have cost the jobs of some of the local’s 150 members.
A city council-commissioned study by Merril Lynch showed that the loss of revenue to the city would eat up any money gained by selling the profitable utility after 12 years.
