Shercock is a civil parish in the southeast of Cavan, on the border of County Monaghan.
Shercock was and still is a largely rural, undeveloped area, home to about 5,000 inhabitants in 1837.
Lewis notes that Shercock was formerly noted for the weaving of coarse linen, but "of late years it has considerably diminished." The lack of employment in Shercock was much cited by the emigrants who came from the area.

Shercock made a winning start to their Cavan JFC campaign when on Saturday evening last before a small attendance at Kingspan/Breffni Park, Cavan they defeated Corlough in a closely contested game by one point – 1-9 to 2-5.
However, Shercock showed good battling qualities in the closing stages of the game and just pipped their opponents at the final whistle.
A draw might have been a fairer result on the overall play, but credit to the East Cavan side for holding their nerve in what was a very close contest.

Trouble with the shercock area is that few anglers stay there so info is hard to get.
We normally fish church lake about 4 mile out of shercock, some cracking hybrids, bream roach and pike, but again can be patchy.
I dunno whether you've ever fished Druminick, its a couple of miles along the road past Muddy Lake (coming out of Shercock) on the left-hand side.

 The rocky road from Shercock to Dublin
Dublin was a far away place from Shercock in the 1940’s and the sixty-mile trip took considerable time; the maximum speed of most vehicles was about 30 miles per hour.
If you wished to travel to the big city you had the option of travelling by bus or by hackney car or on you’re bike.
We had tea in a small restaurant owned by a friend of Johnny’s from Northlands (a townland situated half way between Shercock and Kingscourt).

As I have only just started looking at my family genealogy, I am afraid that the only piece of information I have about my Cavan relatives is that Robert Cruickshank married Eliza Bradley near Shercock Kilmauren and they had 11 children.
Also looking for Esther Chambers Vane who resided in Shercock and was on the 1901 Census for Shercock, living with her daughter, Elizabeth Pratt.

Unfortunately I cannot find any info on a May family, although the other last name rings a bell with a local person.
