Sheridan County is located halfway between Yellowstone National Park and the Black Hills of South Dakota, at the base of the majestic Big Horn Mountains.
Sheridan is surrounded by historic spots: Fort Phil Kearny to the south, Little Big Horn Battlefield to the north, the Medicine Wheel to the west and Devil's Tower to the east.

Miech was employed as a full-time firefighter by Sheridan County from 1983 until his position was eliminated in 1999 as a result of a consolidation agreement between Sheridan County and the City of Sheridan, intended to "provid[e] emergency services.
His application was initially rejected, but later the County offered to hire him in the position as an at-will employee, with a lower pay than his firefighter job and without reinstatement of his seniority, sick leave, or vacation time.
The County claimed that Miech's job was lost in a reduction-in-force, caused by "lack of funds or the elimination of a position(s)," and was therefore consistent with the policy.

ARTICLE II The governing body having complete legal and moral responsibility for the operation and control of all activities of the Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County is the Board of Trustees.
