		Smith was in Washington, D.C., and could not return a Chronicle call, said UH spokesman Mike Cinelli.
		Smith is the nation's sixth-highest paid public university administrator this year with a compensation package of $521,000 for his dual roles as UH president and UH System chancellor.
		University officials said at the time that any disagreements over Kathy Sheridan, an English professor, would be appealed to Smith instead of her husband to avoid conflicts of interest, but faculty members were not persuaded that their concerns had been addressed.

		Billingsley was born Jan. 16, 1940, in Sheridan to William (Pat) and Wavel Shipley Billingsley.
