		Sherkin is steeped in history and is home to a 15th century Franciscan Friary and the remains of an O' Driscoll castle.

		The main occupations for the Islanders has been fishing and farming, in the last century the Heir Island Lobster boat unique to the island (and built on the Island) was used for Lobster fishing all along the south West Coat from Ballycotton in the East to Crookhaven in the West.

		I went to Sherkin Island on Friday 17th September, where Minister Eamon Ó Cúiv, Minister for Communications, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, was hosting a series of meetings regarding the proposed withdrawal of funding for projects which affect the future viability of Sherkin, Heir, Long, Dursey and Whiddy Islands.
		Following the example of the minority group on Sherkin Island, a minority group on Heir Island have followed suit and are being listened to by the Minister.
		He reminisced of the time when he and his brother were two of only six children at Sherkin Island National School and a time when the cupboards were moved around in the classroom to block the mouse holes.

		I have nothing beyond the generation that emigrated to Canada around 1840 from Sherkin Island: Thomas Tape b @ 1801, Skibbereen, Cork, married Frances GOSNELL in St. Finbarr's Cathedral, Aughadour, Cork and Ross Diocese, Sherkin Island, (daughter of Joseph and Mary (WEBB) Gosnell.
		The family legend is that the first Tape ancestor in Cork was originally from Devon or Cornwall and was shanghied into the navy, escaping on Sherkin Island.
		Today I learned there are five cemeteries on the island and not one as my irresponsible brother/photographer told me (he got engaged the night before he took the ONE photo and "wasn't into graves") I am looking for any info on this family or for information on transcriptions of cemeteries on Sherkin Island.

		Unfortunately, the position still is that the milk supply available on the island is too low to warrant the considerable expenditure and uneconomic running cost which would be involved in the provision and operation of a cream-separating station on the island.
		I think that is the least he should do for the people living on that island.
