	Sherlockiana
		The word "Sherlockiana" encompasses memorabilia, ephemera and collectibles associated with the fictional character Sherlock Holmes and, by extension, the fictional Dr. Watson and the very real Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
		With Sherlock Holmes having so many devoted fans for many decades, it is perhaps not surprising that there is a great deal of Sherlockiana to tempt the would-be collector, and it would be a daunting and impractical task to list every Holmes-related item in existence.
		Nor would the exercise be to much purpose, since the collector of Sherlockiana needs guidance more than he (and, sometimes, she) needs a laundry list of souvenirs.

		This is a field [Sherlockiana] in which all credentials, and especially impeccable ones, are suspect.
		It seems significant, then, that Sherlockiana originates at the very moment of the professionalization of academic literary criticism, when, as Claudia Johnson shows, a new class of bourgeois professional academics was violently wresting hermeneutic control over English literature from the literary genteel Janeites and their ilk.
		Despite the Sherlockians' disclaimers, the mixture of reverence and playfulness, transgression and celebration, in Sherlockiana is in many ways more closely aligned with the activities of more recent media fans than with the belletristic elite.

		The annual meeting and dinner is held around January 5th, and each year the society donates prizes for the two horse races, the Silver Blaze Sweepstakes and the Professor Moriarty Memorial, at Aalborg race course.

		Sherlockiana has both sorts, just like any other fandom.

	Sherlockiana - Miscellaneous
		There is no end to the sort of miscellaneous Sherlockiana one may unearth and add to one's collection.
		Until I'd come across it, I never knew that there had once been Sherlock Holmes cigars, though it makes sense, as Holmes was the Victorian equivalent of a poster boy for tobacco consumption.
		Here's a brief listing of some other miscellaneous Sherlockiana of interest to collectors, probably more readily obtainable than the above item, which I'm guessing would have to be sought out at flea markets and the like:

	Validity of Interpretation in Sherlockiana
		There are three books in Sherlockiana which are infamous for applying literary criticism and analysis of sexual imagery to the canon: Samuel Rosenberg's Naked is the Best Disguise, Christopher Redmond's In Bed with Sherlock Holmes, and Michael Atkinson's The Secret Marriage of Sherlock Holmes and Other Eccentric Readings.
		Sherlockian purists defend the canon from what they see as radical and outrageous interpretations arising out of the modern schools of criticism--deconstruction, structuralism, post-structuralism, Freudian analysis.
		Revisionists, on the other hand, save Sherlockiana from going stale and dying out.

		These are probably best reserved for later, after the beginning Sherlockian has obtained a thorough grounding in our beloved Canon, or the "Sacred Writings of Doctor Watson"."Apocrypha" refers to Sherlock Holmes stories outside of the Canon purportedly written by A. Conan Doyle, and "pastiche" refers to Sherlock Holmes stories written by others.
		I recently became aware of a more recent book entitled Encyclopedia Sherlockiana: an A-Z Guide to the World of the Great Detective by Matthew E. Bunson on Amazon.com If you can’t find either Tracy’s or Clarkson’s books, this one may be the way to go.
		In addition, please let me state that I have no financial connection or interest with any of these works, so my opinion is indeed honest and impartial.

		And when I had read that Christopher Morley was the American pioneer of what we today know and love as "Sherlockiana", it just made sense for me to go back and determine what was so important about him, and to convey this information to the newer Sherlockians out there.
		There are many, many websites devoted to his biography, and I will list some of them at the end of this piece.
		I try to remember and live by some of these gems as I continue to meander through, and labour in, the fields of Sherlockiana.
