  Biography of Roger Sherman
Sherman was again a member; but of this day of clouds and darkness, when the storm which had long lowered, began to burst forth on every side, we can take no further notice than to mention, with gratitude and admiration, the firmness of those assembled sages who with courage, breasted themselves to the coming shock.
Sherman was conspicuous, and contributed, in no small degree, to the perfection of that constitution, under which the people of America have for more than forty years enjoyed as much civil liberty and political prosperity as is, probably, compatible with the lapsed condition of the human race.
Sherman took his seat and beside him placed one of his children, a small child, a child of his old age; the rest of the family were seated round the room; several of these were now grown up.

HVCEO - Town of Sherman, Connecticut
Fertile valley soils are drained northward by Naromi and Wimisink Brooks and southward by Sawmill Brook and the Sherman "arm" or bay of Lake Candlewood.
The central valley, from Sherman Center north to Gaylordsville, is an area of calcium-rich carbonate bedrock weathered from an ancient sea floor when the original continental shore was thrust upward along with the adjacent mountains.
Although Sherman lost several good farms, a small number of dwellings and about 900-acres of land to the waters of the lake, it gained a magnificent lakefront of about nine miles with several islands and land for a Town waterfront park.

 Roger Sherman
Sherman was a descendant of Captain John Sherman, who settled in Massachusetts in 1636, and the son of a Newton cobbler.
Elected to serve his community in the colonial legislature (1755-61), Sherman was also justice of the peace for Litchfield County, county judge (1759), and commissary for Connecticut troops (1759), charged with organizing supplies for the militia during the decisive campaign of the French and Indian War.
Sherman joined the fight for ratification of the new Constitution in Connecticut, enlisting support in a series of open letters in the New Haven Gazette entitled "To the People of Connecticut from A Countryman." He stepped down as a judge on Connecticut's superior court to serve as a representative in the First U.S. Congress (1789-91).

 sherman
Born to a farm family in Massachusetts, Sherman moved to Connecticut after the death of his father, where he initially made his living as an artisan and a farmer, but it was his skill as a surveyor that gave him for land speculation and economic advancement.
Sherman thus came to the Philadelphia Convention in 1787 with as much experience in state and "national" government as any delegate, and more than most.
Portions of this draft letter are found in Sherman's "A Citizen of New Haven," Connecticut Courant, 7 January (CCA21) and in an undated manuscript in Sherman's handwriting entitled "Observations on the New federal Constitution" (Mfm:Conn. 63).

Connecticut merchants yearned for reforms concerning commercial issues and the national debt, but many Connecticut people feared loss of control over their own affairs if the central government was strengthened.
During the discussions, Sherman was able to clear the way for presidential selection when he suggested that, in the case of a candidate not receiving a majority of the electoral college, the House of Representatives (with each state having one vote) should make the final decision.
Connecticut’s economic situation, moreover, favored a prohibition on export taxes, as the state engaged in an extensive exportation of agricultural produce and livestock to the West Indies.
