Sherman Hemsley (born February 1, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American character actor most famous for his roles as George Jefferson on the television shows All in the Family and The Jeffersons and as Deacon Ernest Frye on Amen.
He also played Earl Sinclair's horrifying boss, a Triceratops named B.P. Richfield on the Jim Henson sitcom, Dinosaurs (TV series).
In Italy, Sherman Hemsley was always dubbed by the popular comedian actor Enzo Garinei.

After five years of service, Hemsley was granted a transfer to New York, where within a year, he was trading in his postal route for off-Broadway.
It wasn't long before Sherman Hemsley was offered the part of George Jefferson (replacing his "brother" Henry Jefferson) on All In The Family, and remained in that role for the next 12 years, 10 of them as the star of spin-off The Jeffersons.
Hemsley has acted steadily since, including a 5-year run on Amen, guest spots on Lois & Clark, Martin and Clueless as well as a brief tour in The Real Live Jeffersons stage show.

During its run in San Francisco, Hemsley was spotted by producer Norman Lear who had been searching for two years for an actor to portray an upwardly mobile African American dry cleaner who disliked "honkies" as much as his neighbor Archie Bunker disliked "coloreds" on the ground-breaking CBS sitcom "All in the Family".
For 11 seasons, Hemsley won the approval of the audience as the obnoxious, money-hungry, bigoted George who was always kept from going too far by the love he had for his more-centered wife.
Hemsley's constant employment on TV sitcoms has limited his work in other avenues, although he had frequently performed his song and dance act on the Las Vegas stage and in other venues.

Following the series' demise, Hemsley played an egotistical, loud-mouthed deacon/lawyer at the First Community Church of Philadelphia who tried to keep the new minister, Reverend Gregory, from taking over what he viewed as his personal domain, on Amen.
While Hemsley continues to appear frequently on television as a guest star and has even starred in such failed series as Townsend Television (1993) and Goode Behavior (1996-1997), he has yet to recapture the success he had during the '70s and '80s.
