If the head of household was stationed at C.F.S. Barrington, military families were housed on Sherose Island in 60 foot trailors (excepting the base CO who had a house at the end of the causeway).
At its peak there were well over 100 trailors situated on the island, and isolated from the local population.
Sherose Island was also home to Acadian families until April 1756, when they were expelled forcibly from the island, and surrounding areas.

There is even evidence to suggest that the English had arrived along the shores of the harbour and were trading with the Mi'kmaq as early as 1698.
A lighthouse was built on the island from 1758 to 1760.

Since the Acadians who lived in the Cape Sable region, which comprised before their Expulsion the counties of Shelburne and Yarmouth, were not sent into exile in 1755 with those of Port Royal and of Grand Pré, some people are under the impression that they were never expelled.
May 14, Thomas Hancock, who had been appointed to furnish with supplies the British troops in Nova Scotia, intervened in their favor, asking the Governor and his council to allow them to stay fourteen more days at his own expense.
If after that time it was to be decided that they should go, he, himself, would hire a vessel and would see to it that their demand would be fulfilled.

 Barrington, NS - 1997 - General History - The NBC Group
The first military installation at Baccaro Point, Nova Scotia, the eventual site of CFS Barrington, was a LORAN (Long Range Navigation) site that was put in place in 1943 and run by the RCN.
A mobile home site, with 35 units, was constructed on Sherose Island in 1971, and was located some 15 miles west of the station near Barrington Passage.
Two mobile homes on Sherose Island were lifted from their pads and all power was lost.
