  William Hall Sherwood
William Sherwood’s return to America at age 22 was on the occasion of his 1876 debut at the nation’s Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, performing the U.S. premiere of the Grieg Concerto in A Minor with the Theodore Thomas Orchestra.
Sherwood’s pioneering spirit, coupled with his deep concern that the knowledge of music remained in the hands of an elite, privileged few, propelled him to create what has been acclaimed as one of the greatest contributions to the quality and accessibility of music education in this country.
The legacy of William Sherwood’s devotion to the ideal that “if we were ever to become a musical nation, the energy of teachers must be devoted to the latent musical instinct in every child” shines most brightly in our century-old music school that bears his name.
