Shewa was as defensible as any highland, and usually continued its traditional government even in cases when several surrounding lands were lost.
Most of northern Shewa, made up of the districts of Menz, Tegulet, Yifat, Minjar, Bulga is populated mostly by Christian Amhara, while southern and eastern Shewa have large Oromo and Muslim populations.
Shewa first appears in the historical record as a Muslim state, which G.W.B. Huntingford believed was founded in 896, and had its capital at Walalah.

 Menelek II of Ethiopia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The son of Negus Haile Melekot of Shewa, prince Sahle Maryam was born in Ankober, Shewa.
Ras Araya Selassie died in May 1888 without any issue by Zauditu of Shewa, and the Emperor Yohannis IV was killed in a war against the dervishes at the battle of Gallabat (Matemma) on May 10, 1889.
The succession now lay between the late emperor’s natural son, Ras Mengesha, and Menelik of Shewa, but the latter was able to obtain the allegiance of a large majority of the nobility on November 4, and consecrated and crowned as Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia shortly afterwards.

There was considerable reluctance however on the part of Menelik of Shewa to submit, as he continued to assert that his claim on the Imperial throne was the strongest of all other pretenders.
Menelik of Shewa, who was cultivating a friendship with the Italian government in hopes of gaining their aid in his secret planned rebelion against Yohannis, was equally aghast when the Emperor informed him of this news.
Following the ascendance of the House of Shewa to the Imperial throne, the decendents of Emperor Yohannis IV continued to rule the province of Tigrai by hereditary right until 1974.

The royal family of Shewa was decended from Abeto Yaqob, the son of the 16th century Emperor Libne Dingel, who had taken refuge in Shewa during the religious wars of Ahmed Gragn.
The Council of Boru Meda was convened in the presence of the Emperor of Ethiopia, the King of Shewa, the Archbishops Petros, Lukas and Matiwos, and the Echege of Debre Libanos.
The story of the Italian confrontation with Emperor Yohannis, and the rebellion of the Kings of Shewa and Gojjam against Emperor Yohannis IV is covered in the section dealing with that monarch, as well as the subsequent attack of the Mahdists and the death of the Emperor.

Dejazmach Darge was one of the four sons of king Sahle Selasie of Shewa, a potential claimer to the throne of Shewa.
When Menelik got the title as King of Shewa, confered by Emperor Yohannes IV in 1878, he gave a rich feast at his town, Liche, and honoured Degazmach Gobena with the title of Ras, thus enhancing further his popularity (the other holder of the title of Ras was Dejazmach Darge).
Ras Gobena advanced with his troops to Shewa, and upon consultation he was given the responsibility of guarding a route coming from Abay.

In the Ginchi watershed in West Shewa, analysis of aerial photographs shows that in 1950 only 34% of the watershed was under cultivation, mainly in the lower and middle part of the undulating landscape, 60% was under pasture and woodland, covering the medium and higher slopes, and 6% was roads, pathways and water bodies.
The sloping areas in the highlands of Hararghe, Arsi, Shewa and Wellega are some of the areas which have lost most of their fertile topsoil and have become susceptible to land degradation.
In western Oromiya (Wellega, Illubabor and west Shewa) animals are kept in 'dallaas', a fence-like temporary structure constructed on farmlands where animals are kraaled for systematic collection of manure to increase soil fertility.

In the first six years of his reign, the new ruler managed to put down these rebellions, and the empire was relatively peaceful from about 1861 to 1863, but the energy, wealth, and manpower necessary to deal with regional opposition limited the scope of Tewodros's other activities.
The third, Menelik of Shewa, came to terms with Tekla Giorgis in return for a promise to respect Shewa's independence.
While Yohannis was struggling against opposing factions in the north, Menelik consolidated his power in Shewa and extended his rule over the Oromo to the south and west.

He would remain the ruler of Shewa for another 24 years before he became emperor upon Yohannes' death in 1889 (Pankhurst, R. Ato Bezabeh fled upon the return of Menelik to Shewa in 1865.
Menelik was officially recognized king of Shewa in August of that year.
The city would go on to become an economic center allowing Shewa a better access to the French Gulf of Tadjoura (Marcus, H. Yohannes was unexpectedly killed at the Battle of Matamma on 9 March 1889.

A court in North Shewa adjourned until July 20, 2001 the hearing of Lidetu Ayalew, Secretary General of the Ethiopians’; Democratic Party (EDP), who was re-arrested on June 24,2001.
Police told the court in North Shewa that they suspect Lidetu "had used his mobile phone to coordinate the riot in the capital in April." Police requested for an additional time to search into Lidetu’s mobile phone.
They were taken to court after 55 days of their arrest and the same court in North Shewa released them last week but were detained in prison until yesterday as police told them "there was no car to return them to Addis".

No one knows how many Black people died in the camps at the hands of the SS guards, producer Moise Shewa says, because Jews were demarcated as Jews, but Black people were demarcated by nationality.
Although there does not seem to be a huge amount of documented evidence concerning the Black experience in German concentration camps, the film does provide compelling glimpses of how the Nazis treated their Black victims.

By 1934 reliable provincial rulers had been established throughout the traditional Amhara territories of Shewa, Gojam, and Begemdir, as well as in Kefa and Sidamo--well outside the core Amhara area.

Yohannes continued the unity of Ethiopia started by Tewodros but Prince Menelik of Shewa (who was imprisoned by Tewodros for refusing to submit to him) and the British undermined his ambitions.
They betrayed Yohannes who was an ally of the British during the campaign against Tewodros at the Battle of Metema, in 1869.
Eventually, Menelik of Shewa took the throne and became Emperor.

If I remember correctly, one of the "changes" that Breuer made in his Tanakh was to change Hataph-Patah to Shewa because that is in accordance with the notation system now in use, the other system having been "discarded".
I also believe that one can see the remains of the old system in some Siddurim that have a Hataph-Patah under the Resh in Borekhu in the morning and evening prayers (and before the prayer for the Torah reading), while other Siddurim have the Shewa.
In both cases, I have been informed, the sound should be that of the Shewa Na.

SWABI, Aug 17: Strike was observed by transporters on Friday against the establishment of a toll tax plaza on Swabi-Mardan road and bus stand at Shewa Adda.
The transporters had warned the TM against establishment of bus stand at Shewa Adda and construction of the toll tax plaza and said that the vehicles running on Swabi-Mardan road were local and they could not pay toll tax on each trip.
They said there was no justification for setting up a bus stand at Shewa Adda because they paid toll tax at Swabi bus stand and each transporter was charged Rs5 when he took a break at the Shewa Adda bus stop.
