Introduction - Checklist of the Plants of the Guianas
Underlying all of northeastern South America is the Guiana Shield (Map 2), which occupies a broad area between the Atlantic Ocean and the Orinoco and Amazon rivers.
In addition to the three Guianas, the Guiana Shield covers a small part of eastern Colombia and the Venezuelan departments of Amazonas and Bolívar to the west and parts of the Brazilian departments of Roraima, Pará and Amapa to the south and east.
Overlying the central portion of the Shield are the Roraima sediments that, although lacking in fossils, are believed to have been laid down on the Guiana Shield during the Cretaceous Period (140 - 68 million years ago) probably as shallow marine or brackish water deposits (Gansser 1954, Maguire 1970).

GLACIAL PERIOD, in geology, the name usually given, by English and American writers, to that comparatively recent time when all parts of the world suffered a marked lowering of temperature, accompanied in northern Europe and North America by glacial conditions, not unlike those which now characterize the Polar regions....
Theories based upon the variations in the obliquity of the ecliptic or eccentricity of the earths orbit, or on the passage of the solar system through cold regions of space, or upon the known variations in the heat emitted by the sun, are all insecure and unsatisfactory....
Quaternary geology encompasses both the cold and warm intervals and the glacial and nonglacial processes of the past 2 million years....

Ice age - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Another similar waterfall near Syracuse, New York is now dry.
Long Island was formed from glacial till, and the watersheds of Canada were so severely disrupted that they are still sorting themselves out — the plethora of lakes on the Canadian Shield in northern Canada can be almost entirely attributed to the action of the ice.
As the ice retreated and the rock dust dried, winds carried the material hundreds of miles, forming beds of loess many dozens of feet thick in the Missouri Valley.
