Force field (science fiction) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In science fiction and fantasy literature, a force field or protective shield is a barrier made up of energy to protect a person, area or object from attacks or intrusions.
The idea may be based partly on the concept of a vector field, though in character it resembles the "warding spells," the defensive magic claimed to be used by the Druids and shamans of the ancient world.
Science fiction venues postulate a number of potential uses for force fields, especially in the television series Star Trek:

Deflector shield - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Typically, deflector shields (often referred to as simply "shields") are some form of force field designed to protect against weapons by deflecting or absorbing their impact.
While not "deflector" shields in the most literal sense (all but the "riot shield" absorb energy, much like a Langston Field) Shields in the game are temporarily disabled after absorbing a set amount of energy; however, after a significant time, the shield self-restores (by some uncited mechanism).
Shields are seen many times throughout the Stargate universe, the most powerful usually being Ancient shielding followed by Asgard shields.

In the 18th century, the Scottish clans used a small, heavy, round shield called a targe that was partially effective against the firearms of the time although it was arguably more often used against British infantry bayonets and cavalry swords in close-in fighting.

Yet though the real sun cannot be seen, its life-giving energies continue to reach the Earth, evidence that it still shines beyond the sphere enclosing the planet, a shield opaque to visible light but apparently not to all forms of radiation.
Scientists agree that the shield is the product of an advanced technology; they dub its makers Hypotheticals because so little is known about them, including their intentions.
Whether the shield can protect the planet and its inhabitants from this cataclysm seems highly unlikely.
