Topic: Shifter (bicycle part)

Shifter (bicycle part) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bicycle shifter or gear control or gear levers is a component used to control the gearing mechanisms and select the desired gear ratio.
In either case, the control is operated by moving a cable that connects the shifter to the gear mechanism.
Shifters are mounted on the down tube of the frame, on the handlebars, or at the ends of triathlon bars.

 Derailleur gears -
Derailleur gears are a transmission system commonly used on bicycles, consisting of a chain, multiple sprockets and a mechanism to move the chain from one sprocket to another.
On racing bicycles, 10-gear rear cassettes are appearing as of 2004 for a total of 20 gears.
Most current mountain bicycles have three front chainrings; while road bicycles built for racing still have only two chainrings as a weight-saving measure, and because the smallest chainring is useless to an elite cyclist on roads.

 Sheldon Brown's Bicycle Glossary I--L
Bicycles with internal gearing usually have fewer speeds than comparable bicycles with derailer gears, and the mechanical efficiency is sometimes less with internal gearing.
Because some bicycle users are competent enough to remove their front wheels but not competent enough to secure them properly when they reinstall them, virtually all new bike purchasers have been deprived of the handy function of quick-release front wheels.
These lock nuts are the outermost parts which are screwed onto the axle, and their outer surfaces press against the insides of the fork ends of the frame.

Although there are bicycles designed specifically for touring, it is not absolutely necessary to use one of these.
The other reason for bar-end shifters is that half-step gearing sometimes requires 'double shifts', where you have to shift both the front and rear derailleurs simultaneously, and this is easier to do with the shifters mounted on the handlebars.
The downside of the bar-end shifters is that they require more cable to get between the shifter and the derailleur, which doesn't give as 'solid' a feel to shifting, and may require adjustment after a shift.

It is for index shifters (the kind that clicks into each gear like almost all shifters on new bicycles), but of course it also works with friction shifters.
If you have a friction shifter (not index), the non-indexing cable will shift just as well on your bicycle as this cable, and the non-indexing housing is easier to cut with regular wire cutters.

 Frequently Asked Questions
Bicycle touring is all about choices, whether to tour supported or unsupported, with a group or solo, staying in motels or camping, etc.
The most commonly used shifters for touring are STI (and its non-Shimano variants), a combined brake/shift integrated level, and bar-end shifters, although some tourers still use downtube shifters.
Note that while trailers are generally easier on the bike since the load is trailing rather than hanging on the bike, there is some anecdotal evidence that trailers may cause more rear spoke breakage due to the sideways torque resulting from the trailer attachment to the rear wheel axle (for a single-wheeled trailer).
