Part of the Joshin-Etsu Kogen National Park, Jigokudani Yaen-koen is in a small valley accessed from a gate close to the 1998 Nagano Olympics snowboard half-pipe venue in Shiga Kogen near Yudanaka Onsen.
The Yokoyu river flows down from the ski mecca of Shiga Kogen, and boiling water bubbles out of small crevasses in the frozen ground surrounded by steep cliffs and formidably cold and hostile forests.
The far easier option is to drive, especially if you want to fit in a full day of skiing, or an itinerary such as Zenkouji, Jigokudani, a good soak in one of the rotemburo in the Yudanaka Onsen area, as well as the amazing WWII tunnel complex at Matsushiro.

So I got many, many rejections, all over Japan, and no rooms, finally I found a room up at Shiga Kogen, where they had the slalom and snowboarding, when you think of the Olympic map and where the venues are, imagine Nagano in the middle and Shiga is up and far right.
I walked all over Nagano, over to the Olympic stadium to take pictures of the flame (it was a bit out of town so I took the local train).
When I got there, even though it was sunny in Nagano it was snowing up there and just horrible, the snow was cutting my face it was so hard, so I just walked a little bit there and came back.

I think it's going to take a minute for it to even set in because it's kind of shocking at this point still.
I think some of the people who had some other races to go to, like in Shiga Kogen for the technical events, I think they probably got more frustrated.

You might not have heard that name but you have probably heard about a place in Nagano where you can see "snow monkeys" (Japanese Macaque) taking an onsen.
I had often heard about Jidokudani and even driven past the entrance on the way up to Shiga Kogen more than a few times, but until recently I had never actually stopped to check it out.
(I suppose I was always in too much of a rush to get to the snow at Shiga Kogen).
