 SHIGA-Our Prefecture's Profile
Shiga Prefecture, located in about the middle of the Main Island of Japan, is known for the grand Omi Basin, and the lake of Biwa covering a sixth of the whole area of the prefecture.
Shiga is bordered by mountainous areas in every direction: Nosaka Mountains form its northern border with Fukui, Ibuki Mountains constitute the eastern border with Gifu, Suzuka Mountains form the south-eastern border with Mie, and Hira and Hiei Mountains constitute the western border with Kyoto.
Shiga itself was the political centre for some time, as we know from the old capital of Otsu in the reign of Tenchi emperor, and the castle of Azuchi in the reign of Nobunaga Oda, neither of which, however, exist now because of the frequent war flames.

KIPPO NEWS Tuesday, April 01, 1997
The houses of the Honmachi district in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, are recreations of traditional Japanese machiya of the Edo period (1600 - 1868).
Faced with pressure from the local government to rebuild their homes so that the street could be widened, the residents responded with a counterproposal: designating the street a historic quarter with careful guidelines regulating such aspects of appearance as the housing exteriors, building materials and colors.
We are rebuilding this district on the basis of a new principle, keeping a flexible spirit and aiming to create a neighborhood where we all can see each other's faces.

My first research on the Kitamuki ("North-Facing") Jizô in the Umeda district of Osaka's Kita-ku was prompted by the opportunity I had to participate in a religious survey of the same district initiated by Fujii Kenji (then departmental assistant at the Department of Religious Studies, Tokyo University) and others in 1987.
My oral interviews with residents in the Umeda district tended to evoke responses suggesting that the festival was originally devoted to a tutelary deity of children, but that there were few children anymore; others emphasized the community-centered nature of the rites while simultaneously pointing out that this aspect had been declining in recent years.
