Shigatse is located mostly between the middle of the Himalayas and the middle of Kangdese-Nyainqentanglha ranges.
Shigatse connects with three countries of Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim in the south, Ngari in the west, Nagqu in the north and Lhasa and Shannan in the east.
It occupies an area of 1,76,000 sq km, the latitude being between 82'E and 92'20"E and latitude between 27'23"N and 31'49"N. Former inmates from the prison cells in Shigatse, Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR), have recounted incidents where the 18 deportees were shocked with electric batons, repeatedly kicked in the genitals and forced to stand naked outside for four to five hours at a time, three to four times a week.
The entire group of 18 deportees was believed to have been taken to a prison in Shigatse after spending 11 days in a prison in Nyalam at the Tibet-Nepal border in the first part of April 2003.
Former prisoners also reported that some of the 18 deported refugees were subjected to torture methods that included having sewing needles inserted in between their finger nails and flesh, which in one case was reportedly done to revive one of the 18 who was unconscious.

Ngawang is being held in Nyari detention center in Shigatse awaiting the result of an appeal of his conviction, according to a former prisoner, who is now living in exile after his release last year.
Ngawang was first reported to be held in Shigatse in February 1996, when Dorji Rinchen, a Tibetan businessman imprisoned in the Nyari detention center from 14 August to 8 October 1995, heard of attempts to locate Ngawang and came forward to say that he had seen him there in September 1995.
The Chinese authorities confirmed to the delegation of EU ambassadors to Tibet in May that Ngawang Choephel had been tried on 6 September 1995 and sentenced on 13 November 1996 to 15 years on espionage charges and a further three years on charges of counter-revolutionary propaganda and incitement, a total sentence of 18 years.

Five Tibetans in Gyantse and at least one in Namling - both in the Shigatse area - were imprisoned for distributing prayers or leaflets about the Panchen Lama dispute, and nine monks from Tashilhunpo, the Panchen Lama's monastery in Shigatse, were given prison sentences of up to 30 months for protesting against the Chinese decision.
In May the Chinese announced that five laypeople in Shigatse had been given prison sentences for unknown political offences, but did not say if these were related to the Panchen Lama dispute.
The historic role of the previous Panchen Lama, who died in 1989, became clearer in October when a copy was obtained for the first time outside China of a secret report he had written in 1962 criticising early Chinese policies in Tibet, which he wrote had led to thousands of imprisonments and deaths.
