  Shigefumi Mori Summary
Shigefumi Mori (森 重文 Mori Shigefumi, born February 23,1951) is a Japanese mathematician, known for his work in algebraic geometry, particularly in relation to the classification of three-folds.
He generalized the classical approach to the classification of algebraic surfaces to the classification of algebraic three-folds.
The extension of Mori’s results to dimensions higher than three is called the Mori program and as of 2005, is an extremely active area of algebraic geometry.

The Contributions of Japanese Mathematicians Since 1950 | Science and Its Times: 1950-Present
The work of Shigefumi Mori seems to have been of particular importance because his outstanding mathematical creativity clearly disproves the preconception that Japanese scientists lack creativity.
In fact, a fellow mathematician said of Mori's work that "the most profound and exciting development in algebraic geometry during the last decade or so was the minimal model program or Mori's program in connection with the classification problems of algebraic varieties of dimension three.
Shigefumi Mori initiated the program with a decisively new and powerful technique, guided the general research direction with some good collaborators along the way, and finally finished up the program by himself overcoming the last difficulty." For this work, Mori was awarded the 1990 Fields Medal, mathematics' highest honor.

Mathematical Sciences Research Institute - Hot Topics: Minimal and Canonical Models in Algebraic Geometry   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
For surfaces, the situation is a little more complex, but was completely understood in by the early 20th century: most surfaces have unique "minimal" models, and when this is not the case the set of minimal models is easy to understand.
Shigefumi Mori won the Fields medal in 1990 for proving a similar theorem for 3-folds, and there has been intense work on extending the "Mori Programme" to higher dimensions, ever since.
A closely related problem is the finite generation of the canonical ring of a variety of general type and thus the existence of "canonical" models for these varieties.

In 1979, Mori published his first major results, a proof of the Hartshorne conjecture, which stated that a certain class of algebraic varieties are projective in nature.
In other words, these varieties or sets of solutions to given polynomial equations could be described using projective geometry.
