Born in Tokyo, Japan, Michiko Masuda Pierce has studied Shigin (traditional Japanese chant set to poetry) since 1974 and received the highest degree, the So Moto Daihan, in 1990 when she was honored the title of Shingyokukei Sensei.

There is a Japanese Shigin performer who has been quite active in teaching this art form in Albuquerque for many years.
Shigin (Shi means poetry and gin means to sing) is a two-thousand-year-old art form derived from Chinese poetry.
The subject matter tends to be about history, culture or even landscape and they are traditionally written by or about famous Japanese people — scholars, warriors, kings, and some without names.

The 19th century also was one of Japan's periodic revival of interest in things Chinese, reduced somewhat with the advent of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895.
Another late Tokugawa period style was shigin, the singing of Chinese poems in an intense solo style quiet unrelated to the Heian roei tradition of Chinese-based songs.
Shigin was later accompanied by shakuhachi, and during the military spirit of the Meiji period it was combined with a posturing sword dance, tsurugi-mai.

There are several different shigin schools which were founded in the States.
One school in particular that I know of is the "Kokusei-ryu" Shigin Kai which was founded by the late Ara Kokusei (professional name), an issei from Fukushima-ken at the Manzanar Camp during WW2.

The opening of "Matsutake: A Living Legacy" was marked by chanting of traditional shigin poetry by Kokkan Nomura, a presentation on matsutake by Forest Service botanist David Pilz, and fragrant matsutake cuisine made by professional chef Noriko Tatsumi.
Originating in China but introduced to Japan nearly 1,500 years ago, shigin has a long association with matsutake hunting — one of the earliest references to matsutake comes from a poem written in 759.
Following the shigin, David Pilz presented his research on matsutake ecology and harvesting practices in the Pacific Northwest.

For myself, the biggest highlight of this particular year was the July visit to Michigan and Canada by Fuku Soke (Assistant Headmaster) Tsumaki Kazuo Genwa Sensei and his Assistant, Endo Tsuyako Gentei Sensei.
Also included this year was a magnificent demonstration of Kenbu (traditional Japanese dance with sword and fan) by Endo Sensei and an introduction to a Tamiya Ryu Iaijutsu Shigin (Chinese Poetry Recitation) piece by Fuku Soke entitled “Tamiya Ryu Heiho”.
Another very important aspect of their visit was the chance to spend time interacting with the Deshi, both during the training sessions that were scheduled for the various levels of proficiency and socially at the annual BBQ Party held after the Shinsa.
