Shihad: the thing is, nerves are a good source of energy, for what we do, if i'm not nerveous before a show i'm more worried than if i'm relaxed, if you can focus before a show you can channel it into the show apart from that drink a bottle of scotch..
Shihad: no this is the first band i've been in, and for the others, we have been together for 11 years, we met when we were 17 yrs old at school and we are in the same band....

Shihad - Music Downloads - Online
Bio: The origins of the New Zealand-based speed metal band Shihad date back to 1985, when guitarist Jon Toogood and drummer Tom Larkin formed their first group, Exit, while attending high school in the Wellington area.
Shihad's debut EP, Devolve, appeared in mid-1991, and to the surprise of many reached the New Zealand Top 20; Laing soon departed, and was replaced by bassist Karl Kippenberger.
When Shihad resurfaced with 1993's Churn, their sound had grown more industrial; influenced by the likes of Skinny Puppy and Einsturzende Neubauten, the group even began experimenting with samplers.

Shihad's success was unprecedented, not only were the band still in their teens, but there was no video, no radio airplay, and barely any press, word of mouth was the medium speading the news.
Shihad exploded in to 1995 with appearences at several major festivals including the Big Day Out where they performed between Hole and Primal Scream and were consistantly reviewed as the main attraction alongside US industrial rockers Ministry.
Shihad remained in Europe after the tour for a further four months, solidifying their growing fan base and riding on the fanatic media support that accompanied the release of Killjoy.

Shihad's Jon Toogood and Dolf de Borst from the Datsuns first met each other in the early- to mid-90s - they can't remember exactly - at a Hamilton venue called the Wailing Bongo.
De Borst was still in a band called Trucker and Shihad were well on their way to becoming one of the best live acts in the country.
We used to sneak in to their shows when we were 16 or 17 and I remember getting into fights at the Wailing Bongo 'cause our drummer Matt, who was a bit younger than the rest of us, was getting his arse kicked by some old hairy man and he was only about 14.

Shihad became Pacifier after their American label refused to release their album as Shihad after 911 because they claimed it sounded too much like Jihad.
Although Shihad had been Shihad for more than a decade before that, they reluctantly changed the brand name that they had established over the years with the hope of cracking the American market.
In a statement at their website, Shihad say "The events surrounding the name change and our choice to be known as Pacifier are well documented.

Shihad is an alternative rock and heavy metal band originally from Wellington, New Zealand, where they formed in 1988.
The name "Shihad" was chosen after members of the band misheard " jihad" as "Shihad" in the 1984 David Lynch movie, Dune.
Following the September 11 terrorist attacks the band decided to change their name due to the similarity between the band's name Shihad and the Arabic word jihad.

With a bass player who has learnt his body moves from one Karl Kippenberger (SHIHAD) right down to the haircut, I was enjoying WETA's youthful enthusiasm and total lack of regard for exposing their influences.
After seeing SHIHAD last when they came home from the U.S. of A, a memorable gig at the same venue, a gig that for me, sealed the bands title as NZ's biggest and best live act, tonights performance paled by comparison.
Overall, willing fans of SHIHAD would have undoubtedly enjoyed the aural torture of tonights set yet many would have witnessed the band under better conditions previously and as us reviewers are want to do, a quick survey of Powerstation patrons revealed I was not alone in my audio angst.

New Zealand's own Shihad - (now known as Pacifier - ironically enough, they changed their name to "pacify" potential american audiences after Sept 11, cuz they thought Shihad sounds too much like Jihad)- The best rock outfit in a long time - these guys are real rock stars..

 BBC - h2g2 - Shihad/Pacifier - the Band
Formed in 1988 by Toogood and Larkin while still at high school, Shihad (whose name was misspelled from a reading of 'jihad' in the science fiction novel Dune) began life as a Metallica-worshipping metal band.
This song is probably Shihad's best-loved song in New Zealand, a country which is geographically isolated from the rest of the world and has a tradition of its brightest and best spending significant periods of time overseas.
Their record label wouldn't release their record while they were still called Shihad - a name that still sounded too close to jihad for comfort in a post September 11 world.
