The story given in the anime to the origin of the Shikon Jewel is as follows: Sango takes the group to a cave which is protected by barrier created by guardian (Midoriko), her spirit.
Midoriko (a priestess), from her the jewel of the four souls was born.
When the jewel is used for evil and evil intentions, the demon side, evil side is stronger, but when it is used for good and good intentions, then this side is stronger and good comes from the jewel.
