Shikon no Kakkera means "shard of four souls." When the Shikon no Tama shattered, the "kakkera" flew all across Japan.
For some reason, the shikon fragments convey as much power as the whole jewel by itself; so having more fragments mean that much more power.
The Shikon no Tama contains the sealed souls of the youkai as well, and inside the crystals Midoriko's battle wages on.
