Shildon is a town in County Durham, in England.
It is situated to the south of Bishop Auckland and the north of Darlington.
Shildon is around 2-3 miles from Bishop Auckland, 10 from Darlington, 21 from Durham, 30 from Sunderland and 35 from Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The coal producing area around Shildon and Bishop Auckland was unfortunate in having no navigable waterway; consequently coal supplies for the Darlington area had to be carried in the panniers of packhorses and asses.
On 19 April 1842 the railway was opened through Shildon Tunnel to South Church, passing through the east–west ridge that rises to the 500ft contour to the north of the town.
Shildon is the furthest point that the railway reaches on the original 1825 route.

It is one of 5 strong competitions in the North/East of England and has 12 teams in the competition.
The ground at Shildon is the best batting wicket in the league and they have hosted many 2nd X1 county games over the years.

On 7 January 1935 the extensive yards at Shildon were closed and on 9 July 1935 the engine shed followed suit.
Shildon station marks the start of the double track section to Heighington, passing the site of the former Shildon Yards and following the course of the original 1825 route.

For all their graft and application City ran out of time to claw their way back and conceded defeat, ironically to the side who had been City's last victors in a match which heralded Shildon's succesful FA Cup campaign and City's impressive undefeated league and cup run.

 Timothy Hackworth
Hackworth was born in Wylam, Northumberland, on 22nd December 1786 and died in Shildon, Co Durham, on 7th July 1850.
At the age of 24 he became a member of the Weslyan Society, and was a local preacher and class leader until the period of his death.
When he came to Shildon, Durham, there were no facilities for worship, but in three years a commodious chapel was built and there were no less than 34 local preachers; and all this progress took place under the guidance of Hackworth.

 Timothy Hackworth Victorian & Railway Museum-Recall Society
THE SHILDON RECALL SOCIETY is a small group of people dedicated to the task of preserving Shildon's past, through the collection and subsequent archiving of documents and photographs relating to the town and it's inhabitants.
The Society meets in the Shildon Centre each thursday evening from 7.30-9.00pm, and is an informal gathering of those with an interest in local history, particularly relating to Shildon and the surrounding areas.
Each year a display of photographs is shown at the Shildon Gala, and members are available for slide shows for clubs, nursing homes and societies, for which no charge is made, although a donation towards travelling expenses would be most welcome.

Staff at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon opened the doors to the public for the first time on Saturday September 25 and the £11.2 million project is now open daily for preview visits ahead of the official VIP opening in October.
Locomotion is the first new National museum to be built in the north east, and Shildon is an appropriately historic venue for the project.
It was in September 1825 that Timothy Hackworth and George Stephenson's Locomotion pulled the world's first steam-hauled passenger train, from Shildon to Darlington, on the Stockton and Darlington Railway.
