In 1975, Shildon was one of the largest railway wagon works in Europe, a long way from that small beginning in 1825.
As a result of easier and cheaper transport, traffic boomed, and over the first few years of the railways existence, one of the main problems was coping with the management of this new sort of enterprise.
The original "Locomotion", could not be made to work again without extensive rebuilding which would have destroyed its authenticity as an historical museum item.

Shildon is a town steeped in history, the history of the railways began not in Darlington but in the town of Shildon.
Shildon was where George Stephenson set out on the 26th of September 1825, with Locomotion Number One, on the historic journey to Darlington.
Shildon was the Western terminus for locomotives on the Stockton and Darlington railway, so in effect was the true birth place of the railways.

The Weardale and Shildon Water Company commenced a domestic water supply in 1871 and Electric lighting was introduced in 1902.
Shildon, more famous for its steam locomotives, had an electric railway from 1920 until 1935 extending to Simpasture initially and was worked by a fleet of Sentinel electric locomotives, which were garaged in the Shildon wagon works.
Shildon wagon works, or BREL as it was known finally closed its doors in 1983.

About half the size of the York rail museum 25,000 visitors have already called in at Shildon in the last month!!!!......almost half of the expected amount in a year.Everyone concerned is delighted with todays opening and the prospect of lots more visitors to Shildon in the future.
Reluctantly Hackworth agreed, and thus supervised the construction of the first locomotives at this works: it was Hackworth who suggested coupling the wheels of S and D locomotives No 1 Locomotion and its three successors with outside rods and return cranks instead of chains.
Residents of Shildon were bursting with pride as thousands of visitors flocked to their hometown to witness the start of a new era.

NMSI is the National Museum of Science and Industry which comprises: the Science Museum in London and Wroughton, near Swindon; the National Railway Museum in York and Shildon, County Durham; and the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford.
Shildon plays host to "Locomotion" a National Rail Collections Centre which houses, conserves and provides public access to the NRM's reserve collection.
NMSI Wroughton is currently a museum store serving the conservation, object storage and transportation needs of many museums.

Chaldron" (a measure of coal) wagons and a coach for the Directors from Shildon to Stockton at speeds of around 12-15 m.p.h.
"Locomotion No. 1" suffered from a broken wheel soon after it entered service and an exploded boiler in 1828, killed the driver.
The explosion resulted in a complete overhaul at Shildon works, this allowed the loco to remain in service until 1841, when it was bought by Joseph Pease and Partners Limited for use as a pumping engine.

The NRM annexe at Shildon - "Locomotion" - is a development I'd been aware of for a little while.
It was built with a two-fold purpose - to extend the museum based around the remains of the historic Shildon works (parts of which date back to the earliest days of steam railways) and to provide decent accommodation for some of the NRM's "overspill".
I did wonder whether "Locomotion" is a misnomer - given that both the original (1830) and replica (1980) "Sans Pareil" are both present, and the slightly better-known "Locomotion" is not (although both original and replica are in the same county) perhaps "Sans Pareil" might be a more appropriate name...

Shildon Corps has a very active Songster Brigade which takes an active part in the meetings on Sunday as well as frequently ministering to organizations in the local community and surrounding district.
After a 50 year celebration in 2002 the brigade has maintained a yearly anniversary - usually in early May. This year the celebrations were shared with Sherburn Hill Songsters featuring a festival on the Saturday and special meetings on the Sunday.
After the morning meeting the songsters led the corps in open air meeting in the nearby, newly opened Locomotion museum.
