Shilin and Lunan Tourist Information and Travel Guide at InfoHub.com
Yunnan's premier natural wonder is Shilin, the Stone Forest, an exposed bed of limestone spires weathered and split into intriguing clusters, 130km east of Kunming near the town of LUNAN.
This is the most frequented part of the park, with large red characters incised into famous rocks and ethnic Sani, a Yi subgroup, in unnaturally clean dresses strategically placed for photographers, but paths heading out towards the perimeter are far quieter and lead out to smaller, separate stone groupings in the fields beyond.
You can see a bit more by staying the night, as Shilin is surrounded by Sani villages - if you do, Wednesday is market day in Lunan (a thirty-minute ride on a motorbike-taxi from outside the park gates), where Sani sell their wares and sport embroidered costumes.

Death by Cholesterol at the Shilin Night Market   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Over a century old, the Shilin night market is justly famous for both the quality, quantity, and authenticity of cuisine.
And a meal at the market won't actually give you a cholesterol level measurable in kilograms; that is, of course, if you follow these directions: From the Chientian station, head north into the right side of the market, where you'll find the outdoor food market, which serves relatively slow-killing delicacies.
Should you foolishly disparage my advice, and head down to the back-end food court at the Shilin night market (perhaps taking a few of your drunken frat-boy buddies with you to engage in some sort of ill-conceived eating contest), you will almost certainly die of heart failure within the hour.

 Shilin Guangji
According to the introduction by Zha Fuxi, Shilin Guangji was compiled by Chen Yuanjing during the Southern Song dynasty, then was revised several times during the Yuan dynasty.
Three editions survive: one in Japan printed in 1699, which has qin materials in the seventh volume; one a re-print by the Zhonghua Shuju of the Chunqing Library's edition printed during 1330-33; and one in the Beijing University Library, compiled by the Zheng family and printed during 1335-41.
Perhaps because much of the surviving editions of Shilin Guangji were added during later editions, Zha spends some time describing characteristics of the tablature in Shilin Guangji, to show they do date from the Song dynasty.

The distribution and diversity of soil fauna in a sequence of ecosystem degradation in the Shilin National Park, Yunnan, China has been preliminarily studied.
The small soil fauna biomass and less diversity indicated that the studied soil was in a state of deterioration of soil fauna habitats and, in turn, the soil ecosystem health.
The results also evidenced that the soil fauna in the karst soil was definitely vulnerable regarding the sustainable development of the Shilin Park.
