Club (weapon) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Shillelagh (pronounced "shil-LAY-lee") is a wooden club or cudgel, typically made from a stout knotty stick with a large knob on the end, that is associated with Ireland in folklore.
Shillelaghs may be hollowed at the heavy "hitting" end and filled with molten lead to increase the weight; this sort of Shillelagh is known as a 'loaded stick'.
X-Men villain Black Tom Cassidy was known to wield a Shillelagh both as a club and, as his mutant power, generate destructive concussive force through the wooden stick.

MGM-51 Shillelagh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ford MGM-51 Shillelagh was an anti-tank guided missile designed to be launched from a conventional gun (cannon).
It was originally intended to be the medium-range portion of a short, medium, long-range system for armored fighting vehicles in the 1960s and '70s, but proved the idea unworkable instead.
The Shillelagh was considerably larger than a conventional round, so only a small number could be carried.

A new shillelagh - slightly longer than the original - was commissioned by Jim Gillis, a former baseball player at both USC and Notre Dame and a one-time president of the Notre Dame Club of Los Angeles, and handcrafted in 1997 in County Leitrum, Ireland.

Folklorist Padraic Colum says the shillelagh should not be considered a symbol of Ireland but a badge of honor for those who carried it.

In May 1966, the Shillelagh was designated as standard equipment, and the tactical and training rounds were redesignated as MGM-51A and MTM-51A, respectively.
The primary deployment vehicle for the Shillelagh missile was the M551 Sheridan AFV (Armoured Fighting Vehicle), which could also fire conventional unguided M409 HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank) rounds from its M81 gun.
In a Shillelagh shot, the gunner aimed the cross-hairs in his telescopic sight at the target, and fired the missile.

Grant is careful not to ascribe any of the Padres' success to his shillelagh, but he was also careful not to brandish it in the clubhouse after first baseman Phil Nevin suggested its presence posed a potential jinx.
